Charleroi girls shut down Conemaugh Township
Two first-half goals – one each by Kyra Watkins and Kaitlyn Riley – and Sidney Toth did not allow a goal as Charleroi defeated Conemaugh Township 2-0 in the first round of the PIAA Class A Girls Soccer Playoffs Tuesday in Somerset.
The Cougars (17-1-2) advance to play Loyalsock Township in Saturday’s quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.
The match was delayed in the first half when one of the PIAA officials injured his hamstring. An official, who was observing from the press box, came down to take his place.
Watkins scored in the 11th minute, sending a shot to the lower left corner from 18 yards out. Riley followed with a goal with 6:36 left in the half. It went in just inside the far post on a cross from Adrianna Gottheld.
The Cougars’ defense was outstanding, allowing only four shots on goal, which Toth stopped.
South Fayette 2, Thomas Jefferson 0: South Fayette got past the first round of the PIAA Class AA soccer tournament with a strong defensive effort and timely goals in the second half.
Jordan Smith and Matt Thomas each scored a goal and assisted on each other’s to send the Lions past Thomas Jefferson 2-0 at North Allegheny High School.
South Fayette, the WPIAL champion, will play Susquehanna, the third-place finisher in District 3, in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Sites and times are yet to be determined.
Smith scored with 15 minutes left to play in the game off a pass from Thomas. They teamed up with five minutes remaining when Thomas scored on an assist from Thomas.
South Fayette moved its record to 19-3.
