Cal women open with win
WEST LIBERT, W.Va. – Miki Glenn scored 27 points and had five assists as Californina University opened its season with a 76-67 non-conference victory over Notre Dame, Ohio, in the opening round of the 2015 MEC/PSAC Challenge in a women’s basketball game Saturday.
California, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, is ranked fifth in the country.
Seairra Barrett added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Vulcans (1-0), while Paige Wright chipped in 11 points.
California led, 18-16, after the first quarter, but Notre Dame (0-1) went on an 18-13 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 34-31 halftime lead.
The Vulcans, however, came out hot in the third quarter, outscoring Notre Dame, 25-14, to take control.
Martha Nagbe had 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Notre Dame, while Lauren Langenderfer had 14 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.
The Vulcans will play host West Liberty at 2 p.m. Sunday in the second game of the tournament.
