Tough debut for W&J men’s coach

The Ethan Stewart-Smith era got off to a rocky start at Washington & Jefferson College.

Stewart-Smith, making his coaching debut with the men’s basketball program, saw Baldwin Wallace roll to a 79-60 victory at Henry Memorial Gymnasium.

Also making his debut was Brian Graytock. The sophomore led all W&J players with 16 points in 36 minutes. He also had three steals, two rebounds, a pair of assists and two blocks.

Christian Rohaus joined Graytok in double figures with 11. Gianni Buarne chipped in nine points and three rebounds and Joe Satira added six points and five rebounds as other first-time starters.

Brian Lindquist, who played all 26 games last season, produced eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks in 29 minutes.

The 31-year-old Stewart-Smith, an assistant at Carnegie Mellon last season, replaced Glenn Gutierrez, who resigned after nine seasons and a 104-140 career record.

Sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf had a double-double for Baldwin Wallace with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Joining Fetherolf in double figures were All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn with 13 points, freshman guard Michael Peters with 12, junior forward Jaelen Hollingerwith 12 points and senior guard Brandon Gleim with 10.

West Liberty 108, California 74: Facing one of the top programs in the country, California University suffered a 108-74 loss at No. 3 West Liberty in the second annual Charles and Lavoo Crutchfield Mountain East Conference- Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Challenge Sunday.

Cal fell to 0-2, and West Liberty, which advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship game, last season moved to 2-0.

Cal sophomore forward Tony Richardson scored a team-high 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds and made two steals while playing just 16 minutes. Sophomore transfer Luka Andjusic finished with 11 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Senior Khalil Jabbie had 10 points and four assists, and Richard Smith had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Hilltoppers had an 11-3 run over four-plus minutes to stretch their first-half lead to 36-22 and closed with an 11-4 run over the final three minutes to take a 54-36 lead at halftime.

West Liberty senior forward Seger Bonifant, a consensus All-American last year, scored a game-high 31 points, making 13 of 18 shots. Junior Zac Grossenbacher finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and three other players added 12 points. South Fayette graduate Mike Lamberti, a senior, finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Women’s results

West Liberty 88, California 65: In a rematch of last year’s regional semifinals, the No. 5 California University Vulcans suffered an 88-65 loss to No. 21 West Liberty at the Conference Challenge hosted by the Hilltoppers Sunday afternoon.

Cal fell to 1-1 after facing two of the top teams in the preseason Mountain East Conference poll. The Hilltoppers improved to 2-0 after returning three All-MEC players from last year.

Junior guard Miki Glenn scored a team-high 23 points on 6 of 19 shooting and hitting 11 of 12 from the free-throw line. She also collected seven rebounds, had six assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Glenn averaged 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the tournament games.

Sophomore Seairra Barrett had a double-double for the second-straight game, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds, three on offense. Junior Precious Martin chipped in with 12 points on 5 of 7 attempts from the field.

West Liberty closed the second quarter on a 13-2 run after making a three-pointer as time expired to take a 39-25 lead. Early in the third quarter, West Liberty mounted an 8-2 run to stretch the lead to 48-29.

West Liberty senior guard Kaliee Howe led all players with 35 points after making 12 of 21 shots from the field and 9 of 14 from the free-throw line. She also collected six rebounds, had seven assists and four steals. Fellow senior Liz Flowers added 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks, and Kierra Simpson tossed in 10 points and eight rebounds while playing just 19 minutes.
