Waynesburg falters late, falls in season opener
WAYNESBURG – Heidi Langhorst scored 14 points and the Penn State-Behrend women’s basketball team used a 17-0 run in the fourth quarter to rally for a 60-50 victory over Waynesburg in a turnover-filled season opener for both teams Tuesday night at Rudy Marisa Gymnasium.
Waynesburg led 11-8 after the first quarter, 19-18 at halftime and 40-39 following a layup by Cassidy O’Keefe with 7:46 remaining. The Yellow Jackets, however, would not score again until a free throw by Lauren Blair with 1:23 left. The scoreless drought of more than six minutes enabled Behrend to forge a 56-40 lead.
Behrend took the lead for good at 42-40 on a three-pointer by Erika Woll, who finished with 11 points. The Lions overcame 28 turnovers by outscoring Waynesburg 21-9 at the free-throw line. Dani Reinwald scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Behrend.
Waynesburg was led by Heather Davis, who had game highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds. A jump shot by Davis with 8:35 remaining gave Waynesburg a 38-35 lead but the Yellow Jackets made only four field goals over the remainder of the game.
The Yellow Jackets committed 30 turnovers.
