W&J women notch first win of season
Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 29 points to power Washington & Jefferson to its first victory of the season, 73-62, over Pitt-Greensburg in the Hyatt Place South Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, was 12 of 20 from the field and made all five free throws for the Presidents (1-1). She also pulled down 14 rebounds, had three assists and three steals.
W&J dominated inside, outscoring UPG, 50-28 in the paint. The Presidents also had a 10-0 advantage on fast break points.
Emily Nelson had 21 points and Lindsay D’Agostino and Sylvia Stuart each scored 13 for Pitt-Greensburg (0-2).
Waynesburg 73, Case Western 69: Lauren Blair hit five three-point field goals and scored 16 points to help Waynesburg stop Case Western Reserve, 73-69, in the Purple Raiders Shootout at Mount Union.
Heather Davis scored 13 points for the Yellow Jackets, who made a 39-36 halftime lead stand. Kate Gelhmann added 12.
Waynesburg (1-1), which outrebounded Case 47-40, never trailed in the second half.
Jessica McCoy led Case (0-3) with 20 points and Kara Hageman tossed in 17.
Calvin 83, Waynesburg 77: Five players scored in double figures to help Calvin stave off Waynesburg, 83-77, in the Great Lakes Classic in Delaware, Ohio.
Waynesburg (0-2) trailed 39-33 at halftime but tied the game, 68-68, with 4:58 to play but never lead in the second half. Calvin ended the game on a 15-9 run.
Brad Visser and Austin parks each scored 15 points for Calvin (1-0) and Michael Welch and Jordan Delaney each added 13. Cam Denney had 11.
B.J. Durham had a game-high 27 points for Waynesburg, which was outrebounded by a whopping 52-30. D.J. Ritchie scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Nate Labishak scored 11 points and Dylan O’Hara 10.
