W&J women beat Otterbein, win tournament

Washington & Jefferson’s women’s basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to hold off Otterbein, 68-63, and win the Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South tournament championship Saturday afternoon at Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (2-1) led 18-11 after one quarter, 31-24 at halftime and 52-42 after three quarters. Otterbein pulled to within 67-60 with 1:57 remaining but the Cardinals didn’t have enough offense left to complete the comeback. The Presidents were held to one point over the game’s final five minutes.

Beka Bellhy led the W&J attack with 13 points, including nine in the second half. Amirahj Moore and Danielle Parker, the latter a freshman from Canon-McMillan, each scored 12 points and Taylor Cortazzo had 10. Moore had seven assists and Parker grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Abby Miduri scored a game-high 21 points for Otterbein.

California 67, Lock Haven 48: Point guard Miki Glenn led three California players in double figures with 15 points as the Vulcans pulled away in the second half to defeat Lock Haven 67-48 in a PSAC game.

It was the first home game for California since winning the NCAA Division II national championship last season.

California improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall. Lock Haven is 0-2, 1-3.

Glenn made seven of 10 shots from the field and also contributed six assists. The Vulcans led 33-24 at halftime and then used a big third quarter to forge a commanding 54-33 lead. California had a 12-0 run during the third quarter with Glenn scoring the first six points.

Seairra Barrett scored 14 points for Cal and Precious Martin tossed in 10. Shartar Parson grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

California shot 45 percent from the field and forced 18 Lock Haven turnovers. Cal committed only five turnovers.

Lysa Mealing scored a game-high 15 points for Lock Haven.

Mount Union 87, Waynesburg 57: Katie Reed scored 21 points and made six three-pointers to power Mount Union to an 87-57 victory over Waynesburg in the championship game of the M-Club Classic in Alliance, Ohio.

Mount Union (3-0) came out strong in both halves, outscoring Waynesburg (1-2) 28-14 in the first quarter and 30-17 in the third quarter.

Heather Davis scored 21 points and made five three-pointers for Waynesburg.

California 70, Lock Haven 47: Drew Cook led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points and California University earned its first win of the season, 70-47, over Lock Haven in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.

Cal (1-1, 1-3) led by only 27-22 at halftime but scored 43 second-half points to pull away.

Senior forward Nate Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate and transfer from Washington & Jefferson, scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, tossing in 11 points for the Vulcans.

Cal took control of the game in the second half by using a 19-3 run that opened a 49-29 advantage. The Vulcans held Lock Haven (0-2, 2-2) to only one field goal for a stretch of more than seven minutes in the second half.

Richard Smith had seven points to go with his game-high 10 rebounds for California, which held Lock Haven to 30 percent shooting from the field. The Bald Eagles were 2-for-17 from three-point range.

Brahieme Jackson led Lock Haven with 11 points and Shawn Church scored 10.

Penn State-DuBois 89, Wash & Jeff 83: Gustin Luis Conde and Sam Roselli combined for 53 points and led a second-half comeback as Penn State-DuBois rallied for an 89-83 victory over Washington & Jefferson at Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (0-3) had forged a 49-35 halftime lead but PSD (4-1) rallied over the final 20 minutes.

Luis Conde scored a game-high 27 points and made 12 of 14 free throws. Roselli followed with 26 points and Tristan Pierce scored 16 of his 18 points during the second half. Kyle Mills scored 12 points to give the winners four players in double figures.

The Presidents were led by Brian Graytok’s 19 points and four assists. Joe Satira scored 15 points and Gianni Buarne scored all of his 15 points during the Presidents’ big first half.

W&J led 80-70 with 6:40 remaining but the Presidents scored only two points over the next six minutes. Penn State-DuBois took the lead for good at 84-82 on two free throws by Luis Conde with 1:25 to play.

Alma 101, Waynesburg 57: Alma shot a blistering 57 percent from the field and earned its first win of the season with a 101-57 thumping of Waynesburg in the Great Lakes Classic in Delaware, Ohio.

Alma (1-2) forged a 20-lead midway through the first half and led 50-20 at halftime.

Chase Fairchild scored 16 points and D.J. Beckman had 15, including the 1,000th of his career, to pace Alma, which made 14 of 28 three-pointers.

Waynesburg (0-3) shot only 33 percent from the field and was beaten 44-24 on the boards, received 13 points from Jon Knab. D.J. Ritchie followed with 12 points and B.J. Durham had 10.
