Koroly, Hull lead Hillers over Uniontown
A lot has to go right the rest of the season for the Trinity Hillers to return to the WPIAL football playoffs under first year head coach Jon Miller.
A week after being shutout by Thomas Jefferson, the Hillers needed this win.
On homecoming night, Trinity used a dominating performance from the offensive line and defense as the Hillers ran over Uniontown, 44-7.
The Hillers (3-3, 3-3) stayed in the middle of the pack for the final playoff spot in a jumbled Big 10 Conference race.
”They are all must-wins from here on out,” said Miller. “We had to play better than what we did last week. There are no freebies anymore. It’s good to see the kids came out and played hard and physical. We did a nice job of reacting to what happened last week. We fixed our mistakes and played a lot harder.”
Trinity running backs Dajour Hull and Joey Koroly combined to run for 294 yards on 23 carries, scoring four touchdowns.
The Hillers pushed the Red Raiders around from the opening kickoff and scored on their first five drives of the game against Uniontown (0-6, 0-6).
”It was a mindset,” Miller said. “We wanted to have the mindset that we were going to move the football. We didn’t care who was on the other side. We just wanted to come and improve as Trinity football.”
Sam Trapuzzano gave the Hillers a 10-0 lead with a 41-yard field goal drive before Hillers’ quarterback Dylan Kern threw a beautiful 13-yard fade pass to the corner of the end zone that Dausen Marry hauled in for a touchdown and a 17-0 Hillers lead.
Kern then went to work on the ground, scoring on a 14-yard scramble to make it 24-0.
The sophomore quarterback put together completed 6 of 8 attempts for 84 yards and a touchdowns, and added another 23 yards rushing and a TD.
Dajour Hull, who scored the first TD of the game, broke loose with a 62-yard run to move the ball down to the Uniontown three-yard line. One play later, Hull punched it in to send Trinity into the locker room with a 31-0 lead.
”Trinity is a much improved football team,” said Uniontown head coach John Fortugna. “You can just see them getting better and better each game. They are very strong up front. They will be in the playoffs and they will do well.”
Just as impressive as the Hillers ground game was the Trinity defense.
Trinity allowed only 89 yards of total offense, 57 that came on a touchdown run from Red Raiders quarterback Phil Mosely after the Hillers starters were out of the game. The Trinity starters allowed only one first down that didn’t come via penalty and forced a pair of turnovers.
”The defense played great and we expect them to,” said Miller. “That’s one of the reasons I took this job. We wanted to be better on defense. It was nice to see us play a physical brand of football and have multiple guys running to the ball. That’s what’s going to make us a better team as the season goes along.”
Hull and Koroly each scored in the third quarter.
Hull finished with 157 yards and three touchdowns and Koroly added 137 and one touchdown.
”They are both great running backs,” Miller said. “They both offer something different. It’s fun to watch them when there is open space. They did a great job of running physical and finding the holes.”
