Girls soccer: C-M secures section title with victory over Moon

Canon-McMillan won the Section 2-AA championship Monday night by scoring two first-half goals and blanking visiting Moon, 3-0.

The undefeated Big Macs (11-0, 14-0-1) forged a lead on first-half goals by Sabrina Bryan and Aideen O’Donoghue, and Allison Thomas found the back of the net on a shot in the second half.

Goalkeeper Megan Virgin had to make 11 saves as the Big Macs won for the 11th time by shutout.

Moon is 8-3 in section and 11-3 overall.

• Peters Township might not have played its best game of the season but the Indians still earned an important 2-0 victory over host West Allegheny Monday night in Section 2-AA.

After a scoreless first half, Madeline LaVigna scored the game-winner for PT (8-2, 11-2) with 33:22 remaining in regulation. Bree Latsko added an insurance goal seven minutes later for the Indians, who have a key match Wednesday at home against Canon-McMillan.

PT goalkeeper Riley McGlumphy made two saves as the Indians won via shutout for the ninth time.

• Brittany Palm scored three goals and assisted on another as McGuffey cruised to a 6-1 victory over visiting Uniontown in Section 4-AA.

The Highlanders, who led 3-0 at halftime, also received two goals from Sammie Hancher and Megan Lawton had a solid game with one goal and two assists.

McGuffey improved to 4-5-1 in section and 5-62 overall. The Highlanders have won two in a row and three of their last four matches.

Uniontown (1-15 overall) is winless in section play.

• South Fayette moved closer to the Section 5-AA championship as it rolled over Obama Academy 10-0.

Brenna McGuire and Megan Hoerger each scored two goals for the Lions (10-0, 12-2-1), who can win the section title Wednesday with a win over South Park. Goalkeeper Natalie Caraway had her 11th shutout of the season.

• There were seven goals scored in the Section 2-A match between Beth-Center and host Chartioers-Houston. Those two goals were scored by only two players.

Hannah Lacey scored four goals for Beth-Center, including the game-winner with six minutes left in overtime, as the Bulldogs pulled out a 4-3 victory.

Beth-Center (4-8, 5-8) had to fight off a comeback by Chartiers-Houston (5-8, 5-12), which used Erin james’ third goal of the match, with only 22 seconds left in regulation, to tie the score at 3-3.
