WAYNESBURG – Freshman quarterback Jake Dougherty threw three second-half touchdown passes Saturday afternoon as Waynesburg University pulled away for a 28-15 victory over Thiel in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Waynesburg (2-4, 3-5) led 7-3 at halftime and Doughety’s passing helped the Yellow Jackets score the first 21 points of the second half for a commanding 28-3 lead.

Dougherty connected with Willie Leavell on a 19-yard touchdown less than six minutes into the third quarter to make it 14-3. Leavell had opened the scoring with a two-yard TD run on the game’s opening possession.

Dougherty, who completed 20 of 27 passes for 296 yards, hooked up with Tim Cooper for a 34-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, then threw a 13-yard TD to Kevin Barnes that gave the Yellow Jackets the 25-point lead with 9:48 left in the game. Barnes, a wide receiver, had a big game with seven catches for 138 yards.

Thiel (0-5, 1-6) scored two touchdowns in the final seven minutes, both on runs of nine yards by quarterback Ryan Radke. The Tomcats had pulled to within 7-3 when Cody Dinger kicked a 27-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the first half.

Jerry Lawman led Waynesburg’s running game with 17 carries for 79 yards. Nose tackle Zach Machuga made four tackles for loss and defensive lineman Aniellio DeStefano had two sacks.
