BROWNSVILLE – Burgettstown clinched its first WPIAL football playoff berth since 2009 by shutting out Brownsville, 10-0, in a Class AA Interstate Conference game Friday night in Republic.

Burgettstown (5-3, 5-4) finished in the fourth place in the conference and earned the league’s final postseason spot. The Blue Devils and Derry, which defeated Waynesburg, finished with the same conference record but Burgettstown got the postseason berth by virture of a one-point win over the Trojans last weekend.

Quarterback Brad McLuaghlin gave Burgettstown the only points his team would need when he ran 24 yards for a touchdown with 2:31 remaining in the first half. McLaughlin had been shaken up earlier in the drive and had to leave the game for a play. On the first play after returning, McLaughlin scrambled for the game’s only touchdown.

McLaughlin completed six of 13 passes for 101 yards and was the Blue Devils’ leading rusher with 92 yards on 22 carries.

Reed Reitter gave the Blue Devils some insruance when he booted a 26-yard field goal with 1:47 left in the game.

Burgettstown’s defense held Brownsville (2-6, 2-7) to 199 total yards with much of its coming on the ground. Tryvon Brown gained 112 yards on 21 carries.
