Boomers come back to beat Wild Things

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Schaumburg Boomers scored four runs after two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to rally and defeat the Wild Things, 5-2.
Washington has lost three in a row and seven of eight since being awarded two forfeit victories last week because of Evansville using an ineligible player.
The Wild Things took a 2-1 in the top of the eighth when Matt Peters led off with a double and came around to score on a single by Cody Herald.
Washington then brought in usually reliable reliever Steve Messner (2-3) to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Schaumburg had two runners on base with two outs when Kirshner hit a go-ahead two-run double to left field. Run-scoring singles by Willi Martin and Jared Welch pushed the Boomers’ lead to 5-2.
Messner had allowed an earned run in only two of his last 24 outings.
Schaumburg took a 1-0 lead on a home run by Kyle Ruchim in the fourth inning off Washington starter Jon Klein, who allowed only one run and four hits in six innings.
Washington didn’t get his first hit until designated hitter David Popkins smacked a solo home run in the fifth inning.
It was Popkins’ 20th homer of the season but only the second since July 23. Popkins is the first Washington player to hit 20 home runs in a season since Jacob Dempsey (31) and Grant Psomas (24) in 2009.
