Dougherty, Lawman spark Waynesburg in opener
NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Waynesburg University’s football team unveiled its new starting quarterback and tailback Jerry Lawman scored three times to produce a sixth consecutive season-opening victory, this time 35-10 over Muskingum Saturday.
Jake Dougherty, a 6-2 freshman from Redbank Valley, completed 16 of 26 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. His only interception was in the end zone, ending a Waynesburg scoring threat. Dougherty holds the PIAA record for passing yardage in a game when he threw for 614 yards and seven touchdowns against Clarion last season.
Dougherty’s first collegiate completion went to Tim Cooper for a 26-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and he connected with Kevin Barnes for a 30-yard score in the second quarter as the Yellow Jackets built a 14-0 lead. Muskingum closed to within 14-10 at halftime.
Lawman scored three times in the second half, going over from 10 and three yards in the third quarter and five yards early in the fourth. Lawman finished with 113 yards on 16 carries.
It was the 65th career victory for Waynesburg coach Rick Shepas, tying him with Frank Wolf (1921-22 and 1928-41) for the most wins in school history. Shepas has a 65-40 career record.
