Wash High wins, but Bosnic not satisfied

3 min read

Not many coaches would be disappointed with a 36-point victory to extend an unbeaten record this season.

However, Washington High School head coach Mike Bosnic was not pleased with the Prexies’ 42-6 victory over Brownsville in Friday night’s Interstate Conference matchup.

“It was just a lack of focus all night long,” said Bosnic. “We were not ready to play.”

The Wash High offense, sparked by running back Kurt Adkins, made up for the mistakes by scoring 28 points. The defense returned an interception for a touchdown and set up two more with turnovers.

That lack of focus showed when Washington (4-0, 4-0) jumped offsides on defense seven times and had two early turnovers, a muffed punt and an interception.

“There were too many distractions this week at practice,” said Bosnic. “Right now, we think we are too good and mentally are just not where we need to be.”

Bosnic knows it is just about regaining that focus throughout the week.

“We have been too loose in practice. We need to get back to the basics to get to where we want to be. I hope tonight was a real eye-opener for us,” said Bosnic.

The Prexies were able to overcome their own mistakes and take advantage of the four turnovers they created on defense.

“The plan was simply to not turn the football over, but unfortunately that is exactly what we failed to do,” said Brownsville head coach Jason House. “Against a good (Washington) team, you can not do that and allow them with short fields to work with.”

The Washington defense, which has allowed only seven points this season, was stout again by only giving up a meaningless touchdown with 5:28 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The four turnovers by the Falcons (1-3, 1-2) resulted in Wash High touchdowns.

“We are a very strong team and come off the ball very fast. Our physicality on top of really good team speed is why we are so good on defense,” said Bosnic.

Despite pulling away in the middle of the second quarter, the Prexies only managed 173 total yards of offense.

Touchdown passes of 54 and 17 yards highlighted Washington quarterback Markel Pulliam’s night. Those were his only completions in four attempts, and he ran for a third touchdown.

Adkins only carried the ball three times for 99 yards, but scored on runs of 30 and 65 yards.

Washington will travel to Mt. Pleasant (4-0, 4-0) next week in a game the Wash High starters will probably do something unfamiliar, play the entire game.

“We have the character to be ready for whatever,” said Bosnic. “I guess we will find out.”
