Boys soccer: PT holds on for 1-0 win over Moon
Luke Kelly scored 10 minutes into the first half and Peters Township held on for a 1-0 win over Moon in a Section 5-AAA match Tuesday night.
Kelly capitalized on a loose ball in the box and goalkeeper Justin Gamble made 10 saves to earn the shutout for the third-place Indians (3-2-1, 6-3-2). The Tigers are 1-4-1 in section and 2-6-2 overall.
• Canon-McMillan got another big game from Nick Sodini and remained undefeated with a 4-1 victory over visiting Brashear in Section 5-AAA.
Sodini scored three goals and assisted on a goal by Brandon Byer as the Big Macs (6-0, 10-0) forged a 4-0 lead.
Canon-McMillan has scored at least three goals in nine of its 10 matches. The Big Macs are one of three undefeated teams in Class AAA.
• With steady rain falling, it was a miserable night to play soccer but Bentworth’s Chad Gurdish didn’t seem to mind.
Gurdish scored three goals and helped Bentworth pull away for a 7-0 victory over visiting Washington in Section 4-A. The win was the fifth in a row for section-leading Bentworth (8-0, 9-2-1).
Gurdish, a senior midfielder, had plenty of support as Darius Hays, Jacob Davis, Wyatt Selvoski and Joe Costello each scored one goal.
Will Bashioum and Austin Curry split time in goal for Bentworth, which registered its fifth shutout.
The game was stopped with 20 minutes remaining because of poor field conditions. Washington’s record fell to 1-7, 1-8.
• Austin Armstrong scored with eight minutes remaining to help Trinity defeat Waynesburg, 1-0, in a Section 6-AA match.
Ben Johnson earned his sixth shutout of the season by making five saves for the Hillers (4-1-1, 6-1-1). The Raiders are 2-5-1 in section and 2-6-2 overall.
• Jeremy Zura scored two goals to lift South Fayette over Obama Academy, 5-1, in Section 5-AA.
Nick Aul, Priamo Perschetti and Matt Cillo also scored for the Lions (8-0, 10-1).
