Baseball: For McGuffey, it’s a streak as Highlanders win 2nd straight
McGuffey won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2012 season as the Highlanders defeated Bentworth, 10-5, Friday in a non-section contest.
Mike Novak had a pair of doubles for McGuffey (2-0), and Joe Townsend, Danny Orr and Adam Blacharczyk each had one double. Orr was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and walking one.
Riley Nickeson doubled for the Bearcats (1-2).
• Bo Haines threw a four-hitter and tripled as Ringgold defeated Steel Valley, 4-1, in a non-section game.
Ryan Varley added a pair of hits for the Rams (1-2).Varley also scored a run and drove in another.
Steel Valley falls to 1-1.
Belle Vernon 13, Greensburg Salem 4: Justin Ivill had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as unbeaten Belle Vernon defeated Greensburg Salem, 13-4, in a non-section game.
Jacob Callaway also had three hits, including a double, while Ben Cole also drove in three runs for the Leopards (2-0). Joel Engstrom was the winning pitcher.
Nick Sabers and Noah Malis had two hits each for Greensburg Salem (2-1).
California 11, Jeannette 0: California remained undefeated with an 11-0 victory at Jeannette in a five-inning non-section game.
The Trojans (4-0) scored 10 runs over the first two innings and winning pitcher Louden Conte improved his record to 3-0. Conte and reliever Korbin Studnicki combined on a two-hit shutout.
Alex Adams led the Cal offense by going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Casey Zajicek also had two hits and two runs.
Fort Cherry 10, Carlynton 5: Winning pitcher Hunter Douglas drove in three runs and Fort Cherry scored seven times in the first inning en route to a 10-5 victory over visiting Carlynton in a non-section game.
Douglas had one of Fort Cherry’s four doubles. Cole Clark, Jacob Baird and Greg Csonko each doubled as the Rangers improved their record to 2-1. Fort Cherry outhit Carlynton (0-3) by a 12-6 margin.
Chartiers-Houston 14, Southmoreland 1: Chartiers-Houston scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to defeat visiting Southmoreland 14-1 in five innings.
The Bucs (2-1) scored five runs before making their first out of the first inning and that was more than enough offense for winning pitcher Ryan Mele, who struck out six, and reliever Zach Southern. The duo combined on a two-hitter. The only run for Southmoreland (0-3) came on a dropped third strike in the fifth inning.
Ryan James had a two-run single in C-H’s big first inning. Southern and Tyrone Wormsley each had two RBI, and Josh Coletti scored three runs and hit a double.
Brownsville 11, Jefferson-Morgan 0: Brownsville scored all of its runs in the top of the first inning and Mason Kelly pitched a three-hit shutout as the Falcons defeated Jefferson-Morgan 11-0 in a non-section game.
The loss was the first of the season for Jefferson-Morgan (2-1), which received some stellar relief pitching from Jake Broadwater, who tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
Brownsville (1-3) had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double by Greg Stiner.
Fox Chapel 7, Peters Township 3: Fox Chapel scored in all but one inning and defeated visiting Peters Township 7-3 in a non-section game.
Peters Township (2-3) was limited to only three hits, including a double by Alex Mundy. Winning pitcher Ryan Humbert issued five walks but PT was unable to take advantage.
Zach Burkhart had a triple for Fox Chapel (2-0).
