Baseball: Cal’s split creates logjam at PSAC West
There is a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC’s West Division.
California and Gannon split a doubleheader Saturday at Consol Energy Park and Mercyhurst swept a twinbill from Clarion, leaving the Vulcans, Golden Knights and Lakers tied with 9-3 league records.
California (16-12), which swept Gannon in Erie Friday, defeated the Golden Knights in the opener Saturday, 9-1, to briefly take sole possession of first place. Gannon, however, moved back into a share of the lead by salvaging the final game of the series, winning 8-3.
Cal’s GJ Senchak tossed a six-hitter in the opener and Chris Wastchak hit a bases-loaded triple as the Vulcans forged a 9-0 lead after two innings.
Gannon (21-8) scored the first six runs of the second game as the Golden Knights stole five bases.
Geneva 9, Washington & Jefferson 4: Andy Santana went 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI as Geneva defeated Washington & Jefferson, 9-4, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Drew Nichols was the winning pitcher for Geneva (2-6, 7-11), allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings while striking out eight.
W&J (3-3, 7-7) received a three-run homer from Canon-McMillan graduate Frank Fortunato.
