Baseball: Two big innings carry Waynesburg over Wash High

Hunter Robinson struck out 11 and hit a key two-run double in the fifth inning Wednesday to help Waynesburg fend off visiting Washington 12-7 in Section 2-AA.

Robinson drove in three runs for the Raiders (1-0, 2-2), who scored seven runs in the first and five in the fifth. Wash High (1-1, 1-2) tied the score 7-7 in the fifth after a three-run triple by Kurt Adkins. Dalton Riggenbach gave Waynesburg the lead again in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single.

Peters Township 8, Carrick 0:

Regan Lawler threw a four-hitter over seven innings as Peters Township defeated Carrick 8-0 to open Section 5-AAAA play.

The game was scoreless entering the fifth inning, when PT (1-0, 3-3) got to losing pitcher Justin Tresatti for three runs.

PT’s Alex Mundy and Matt Wagand each had two doubles, and Eric Riotto, Adam Cisney and Tor Sehnert had one each.

Justin Preston doubled for Carrick (0-1, 1-1).

Fort Cherry 12, Northgate 0: Cam Schaub threw a two-hit shutout as Fort Cherry knocked off Northgate 12-0 in a five-inning Section 1-AA game.

Schaub struck out eight and did walk a batter for the Rangers (1-1, 4-2). Xavier Rousey was the losing pitcher for Northgate (0-2, 0-5), despite allowing only six hits.

Ringgold 9, Thomas Jefferson 2: Bo Haines struck out nine and also had three hits as Ringgold defeated Thomas Jefferson 9-2 in Section 4-AAA.

Dalton Holt tripled, and Connor Garry, Zack Byczynski and Ryan Varley doubled for the Rams (1-1, 2-3).

Beth-Center 3, Frazier 1: Beth-Center played small ball, squeezing in its first run and scoring on a sacrifice fly in a three-run fifth inning to beat Frazier 3-1 in Section 2-AA.

Nick Pryor executed the squeeze to break a scoreless tie. Winning pitcher Jacob Knizer and Lane Ziker combined on a six-hitter for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-2). Ziker was credited with a save.

Logan Muzina and Goerge Smalich doubled for Frazier (0-2, 0-4).

Chartiers-Houston 4, Charleroi 2: Pinch-hitter Destin Weiser delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Chartiers-Houston edged Charleroi, 4-2, in Section 2-AA.

Tyrone Wormsley had three hits, including a triple, for the Bucs (2-0, 4-1), and winning pitcher Ryan Mele threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Josiah Fisher scattered six hits and struck nine for Charleroi (0-1, 3-2).

California 16, Monessen 0: Louden Conte had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as California defeated Monessen 16-0 in a five-inning non-section game.

John DeFranco doubled and tripled, and Bob Harris tripled for California (4-1).

Monessen is 0-2.

Carmichaels 5, McGuffey 3:

Carmichaels scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and they held up as ythe Mikes defeated McGuffey 5-3 in a non-section game.

Carmichaels (4-1) trailed 2-0 entering the fourth. The key hit in the inning was delivered by Jacob Wamsley, a bases-loaded single that drove in two runs. A third run scored when the ball was misplayed for an error in the outfield.

Winning pitcher Matt Barrish pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs (two earned). Jacob Kinsell pitched the final two innings for a save.

Carmichaels, which was held to only four hits, had a double from Joel Spishock. Dakota Wilkinson and Mike Novak each had a double for McGuffey (2-1).

Freedom 5, Burgettstown 3: Winning pitcher Nick Henderson threw a three-hitter as Freedom defeated Burgettstown, 5-3, in Section 1-AA.

Noah Henderson had a two-run double for Freedom (1-0, 2-3).

Losing pitcher Blaine John gave up only five hits. Alex Takacs had a two-run single for Burgettstown (0-1, 1-4).

Pine-Richland 12, Trinity 0: Tim Laylock had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs as Pine-Richland topped Trinity, 12-0, in a five-inning non-section game.

Losing pitcher Tanner Hudak had two hits for Trinity (2-3), which had just three.

Belle Vernon 9, West Mifflin 2:

Matt Benicky struck out nine and Belle Vernon scattered 13 hits in a 9-2 Section 4-AAA win over West Mifflin at home.

Six different players had RBI for the Leopards (2-0, 5-0), who were led by Jordan Zilka’s two RBI. Zilka was one of five Belle Vernon players to have multiple hits, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

Jefferson-Morgan 21, Clay Battelle (W.Va.) 5: Joe Headlee and Zach Shaffer each hit three-run homers to power Jefferson-Morgan to a 21-5 five-inning win over Clay-Battelle (W.Va.).

Jake Bissett was the winning pitcher and hit two doubles for the Rockets (3-1). Gage Clark smacked a triple.

• Upper St. Clair defeated Canon-McMillan 6-2 in Section 5-AAAA. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
