Baseball: Cal sweeps Rock, stays tied for West lead

Led by a six-run sixth inning in opener, California earned a doubleheader sweep over Slippery Rock in PSAC West Division play Friday at Consol Energy Park, 7-3 and 6-2.

The win keeps Cal in a first-tie in the division at 11-3. The Vulcans (18-12 overall) share the top spot with Mercyhurst, which swept Gannon. Slippery Rock is 2-12, 7-26.

The Rock took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning of the opener, getting a three-run homer by Carson Kessler. The Vulcans answered with their big inning, which included a two-run single by Taylor Zackman and a two-run triple by Mick Fennell.

Jack Dennis was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 5-2. Reliever Bobby Thompson ended the game by getting a double play and getting credit for a save.

In the second game, Fennell won his fourth consecutive start and Joe Yourgal hit a three-run homer. Chris Wastchak was 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run homer.
