Big sixth inning sends Burgettstown to key 1-AA win
Cheyenne Winters and Morgan Ellek each drove in two runs in a five-run sixth as Burgettstown downed South Side Beaver in a Section 1-AA game. Kate Tarr struck out eight for the Blue Devils (4-0, 6-2).
McKenna Smith struck out eight for SSB (3-1, 5-1), which suffered its first loss of the season.
Trinity 8, Ringgold 4: Payton Barr had five strikeouts and hit a double to help Trinity defeat Ringgold 8-4 in a Section 3-AAA game.
Barr and Cameron Meier hit triples, and Santana King went 4-for-4 for Trinity (1-3, 2-6). The Rams (2-2, 3-2) scored four runs in the sixth inning and had two hits.
Chartiers-Houston 27, Fort Cherry 0: Six different players drove in at least three runs and Kaitlyn Ditrich pitched two hitless innings to help Chartiers-Houston defeat Fort Cherry, 27-0, in a three-inning Section 1-A game.
Jaylese Lombardi went 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI; Kasey Scears went 1-for-3 with four RBI; and Lauren Lober drove in four for the Bucs (3-1, 4-3). Anna LaQuatra had the only hit for Fort Cherry (0-2, 0-5).
West Greene 16, Avella 0: Bailey Bennington pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and West Greene used an eight-run first inning to defeat Avella 16-0 in a Section 1-A game.
McKenna Lampe went 3-for-3 scored three times and drove in four runs, and Madison Lampe hit an inside-the-park home run for the Pioneers (4-0, 10-1). Sami Dunkle took the loss for the Eagles (0-4, 0-5).
Jefferson-Morgan 12, Mapletown 3: Brooke Diamond doubled in the final two runs as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Mapletown 13-3 in a five-inning Section 1-A game.
Morgan Simkovic and Krista McCartney each had a double for the Rockets (3-0, 5-3). Camryn Dugan picked up the win.
Mapletown fell to 1-6, 0-3 in the section.
Waynesburg 18, Carmichaels 17: Rachel Elsenheimer’s RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning completed an improbable comeback for the Waynesburg in a wild, 18-17 Section 2-AA win over Carmichaels.
The two teams combined for 29 hits and 23 errors in the game and saw Waynesburg (3-2, 3-5) come back from a 10-0 deficit in the fourth inning.
Elsenheimer had three hits and drove in five runs, while Sydney Hare hit a grand slam and Tiffany Ross also homered for Waynesburg.
Kaitlyn Wilson had two doubles, while Shelbee McCann tripled and Megan Walker, Laura Walker, Emma Lowry and Emily Menhart had doubles for the Mikes (3-2, 4-5), who scored at least one run in each inning.
• In other games, South Fayette defeated Chartiers Valley 17-6 in a Section 2-AAA game, Brownsville beat Beth-Center 14-5 in Section 2-AA and Monessen beat Geibel Catholic 14-4 in Section 2-A. No other details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
