The scholastic wrestling season was filled with a number of team and individual accomplishments.

Rick Chaussard led South Fayette to a WPIAL and PIAA team tournament berths and was in the corner when Mike Carr won a second straight individual title.

Joe Throckmorton qualified Waynesburg for the WPIAL Team Tournament and sent six wrestlers to the state individual tournament in Hershey.

And Chris Shilk guided Mapletown to its most successful season since the program was re-established five years ago.

For their efforts, the three will be honored, and the winner announced, at the Tri-County Athletic Directors Coach of the Year Banquet at 5 p.m., Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Meadow Lands.

Tickets for the banquet are $35 each and are on sale at Washington High School, 201 Allison Avenue, Washington, Pa., 15301. Reservations can be made by calling athletic director Joe Nicolella at 724-223-5085, ext. 2091.

All proceeds from the banquet benefit Special Olympics.

Coaches from the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Association are eligible to be finalists.

Chaussard guided the Lions to a 17-7 record and a second-place finish in Section 2-AA. The Lions defeated Mapletown in the first round and upset fourth-seeded McGuffey in the WPIAL Team Tournament. Their run ended when Burrell came away with a 37-32 win in the semifinals.

South Fayette defeated Chartiers-Houston for third-place in the tournament and a spot in the PIAA team event. Fort Leboeuf ended South Fayette’s team season with a win in the first round of the PIAA Team Tournament.

South Fayette qualified three wrestlers for the state individual tournament and had one champion in Carr, who defeated Jimmy Duffy of Smethport, 3-1, in the 145-pound finals.

Waynesburg compiled a 14-5 record while finishing second in the Section 4 Tournament. The Raiders qualified for the WPIAL Team Tournament, where they fell to North Allegheny in the first round.

Waynesburg sent six individuals to the state tournament and came away with two medalists: Shaun Wilson, who finished fifth at 138 pounds; and Colin McCracken, who was seventh at 182 pounds.

Mapletown made its first appearance in the WPIAL Class AA Team Tournament since resurrecting the program five years ago after knocking off Mount Pleasant in the fifth-place bout in Section 2-AA.

The Maples were knocked out of the tournament in the first round by South Fayette. Earlier in the season, Mapletown stunned Jefferson-Morgan in a section dual meet. It is believed to be Mapletown’s first wrestling win over the Rockets in more than 50 years.
