Softball: McGuffey stays unbeaten; Bentworth rallies for win
McGuffey remained one of six undefeated softball teams in the WPIAL – one of only two in Class AA – as the Highlanders defeated host Beth-Center 10-0 in a six-inning Section 2 game Tuesday afternoon.
The Highlanders (5-0, 7-0) scored eight runs over the first two innings and tacked on two more in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Moriah McGuier had a big day in the circle and at the plate. She tossed a one-hitter – a single by Londyn Brown leading off the bottom of the first inning – and helped her cause by going 3-for-4 with a double and six RBI.
Brin Hunter also went 3-for-4, had two doubles and scored three runs. Ella Blackman and Gabby Pettit each doubled for McGuffey.
Beth-Center is 1-6 in section and 1-7 overall.
• Aubree Yates’s walk-off single scored Chase Watson in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Bentworth complete an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Brownsville in a Section 2-AA game in Bentleyville.
Yates had two doubles, including the game-winner, to help Casey Hite earn the win in the circle for the second-place Bearcats (6-1, 9-2). Tiffany Markovitch took the loss, but she struck out three and hit two doubles as Brownsville (4-3, 6-5) scattered 13 hits.
• Payton Barr hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning and Trinity held on for a 5-1 nine-inning win over West Mifflin in a Section 3-AAA game.
Kim Dunst and Addison Barr walked in the ninth inning and with two outs, Payton Barr lined a two-run double for the 3-1 lead. Paige Galentine added an RBI single and Delaney Elling, who reached on a walk, scored on an error for the Hillers (2-4, 3-7). Elling went 3-for-3 for Trinty and Addison Barr earned the win, getting three outs in the ninth after allowing a leadoff single.
Alyssa Bell was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Titans (1-5, 6-6).
• Laura Walker struck out seven and was one of three Carmichaels players to hit a double as the Mikes defeated Washington 10-0 in a five-inning Section 2-AA game.
Walker, who was 3-for-3, Kaitlyn Wilson and Emily Lewis had doubles for the Mikes (5-2, 6-5), who scattered 13 hits. The Prexies (0-8, 0-8) had one hit.
• Madison Renner hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to send West Greene to a 10-3 win over previously unbeaten Frazier in a non-section game at Center Township Park.
Madison Lampe went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored three times to help Bailey Bennington earn the win. Bennington also drove in two runs for the Pioneers (12-1).
The Commodores (7-1), who reached the WPIAL Class A semifinals last year, were led by Janice Eicher, who went 3-for-4 with two runs.
• Erica Amoroso had three hits and drove in five runs as Belle Vernon defeated McKeesport 10-0 in a five-inning Section 3-AAA game on the road.
Amoroso had two doubles and as single. Megan Christner had three singles and Lexie Church hit a triple and drove in a run for Belle Vernon (5-2, 10-4), which was led by Bailey Parshall’s 12 strikeouts.
McKeesport (1-6, 2-8) had four hits and committed two errors.
• Autumn Tedrow belted a three-run homer in Jefferson-Morgan’s six-run bottom of the first inning and the Rockets cruised to an 11-1 five-inning victory over visiting Vincentian Academy in a non-section game.
Morgan Simkovic hit two doubles and winning pitcher Camryn Dugan had a double as Jefferson-Morgan improved to 7-4.
Vincentian is 2-5.
• Meghan Dietrick, the cleanup hitter in Mt. Lebanon’s lineup, led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run to center field as the Blue Devils won at Canon-McMillan 6-5 in a Section 4-AAAA game.
The loss was the first in section play for Canon-McMillan (4-1, 8-2) and snapped the Big Macs’ five-game winning streak. C-M led 5-3 in the fifth inning, after a two-run homer by Linda Rush. But Mt. Lebanon (4-3, 5-4) scored twice in the sixth to send the game to extra innings.
Winning pitcher Catie Rogan struck out 11. She also hit a double. Dietrick had three hits and five RBI.
Brittney Crawford went 4-for-5 with two doubles for Canon-Mac. Rush drove in three runs.
• Chartiers-Houston scored six runs over the final two innings and defeated host Jeannette 10-1 in a non-section game.
Jessica Ford led a 13-hit attack for C-H by going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Allison Smith doubled.
Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts. She did not walk a batter. Chartiers-Houston is 6-3 and has won five in a row.
• California six runs in the second inning and seven in the third as it defeated Fort Cherry 16-2 in a five-inning non-section game.
Winning pitcher Kylie Trusler had five strikeouts to help the Trojans (2-6) snap a three-game losing skid. The Rangers (0-7) led 2-1 after the first inning.
