Baseball: Waynesburg completes series sweep of W&J
Waynesburg scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cameron Bernhardt hit a solo homer and the Yellow Jackets completed a three-game sweep of Washington & Jefferson by defeating the Presidents 5-2 Wednesday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference contest.
The win moves Waynesburg (9-6, 11-18) ahead of W&J (8-7, 14-14) and into fourth place in the conference standings.
The Yellow Jackets took a 4-0 lead with the big fourth inning. Three runs scored on Jonathan Kletzli’s bases-loaded triple. Josh Hausler drove in Kletzli with a single.
That was enough offense for winning pitcher Brian Resnik and reliever Parker Beaty, who combined on a six-hitter. Resnik gave up one run in seven innings for the win and Parker got the final six outs for a save.
W&J pulled to within 4-2 as Ryan Sciullo tripled and scored on a groundout in the seventh and Mark Merlino singled home a run in the eighth. Waynesburg, however, scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Bernhardt homered to left field.
