Baseball: West Greene hands Bentworth first section loss

Mike Howard’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted West Greene to a 6-5 walk-off win over Bentworth in a Section 1-A game.

Dillon Shields, who earned the win with nine strikeouts, hit a leadoff single in the ninth before stealing second and third to set up the winning run for the Pioneers (3-3, 3-5), who have won three consecutive section games. Ty Mitchell had two hits for the Bearcats (5-1, 7-2).

• Jordan West doubled in Nate Swart with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Washington a 4-3 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 2-AA game.

Nate Swart doubled to lead off the inning and Kurt Adkins walked before West’s big hit for the Prexies (3-5, 3-6). Kevin Patterson pitched 6 2/3 innings for Wash High, allowing two runs.

Waynesburg (3-5, 4-8) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth but Jordan Swart tripled in the bottom of the inning and came home on a fielder’s choice by Steven Shallcross. Tre Rohanna had a solo home run for the Raiders.

• Dan Orr’s two-run single highlighted McGuffey’s five-run sixth inning and the Highlanders held on for a 5-4 win over Chartiers Valley in a Section 3-AAA game.

Jared Whirlow hit a leadoff double to start the sixth for McGuffey (1-4, 3-5) while Jordan Reeves drove in a run, Orr’s single drove in two and the Colts committed two errors to help McGuffey snap a five-game losing streak and earn the program’s second section win in two years.

It was the first section loss for Chartiers Valley (4-1, 9-3).

• Nathan Piootka drove in five runs as Serra Catholic defeated Ringgold 15-3 in a five-inning non-section game in Monongahela.

Piootka went 4-for-4 with two runs and a triple and Jake Eged was 3-for-3 with two runs for the Golden Eagles (11-1). Bo Haines hit a solo home run for the Rams (3-9), who are on a five-game losing skid.

• River, Ohio scored three runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a 9-6 win over Avella in a non-section game at Consol Energy Park.

Steve Doty earend the win and Steve Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for River (12-1). Dalton Simonelli had a three-run triple in the first inning for Avella (2-9).
