Softball: McGuffey overpowers Brownsville
Rachel Kleinhans hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Moriah McGuier struck out nine as McGuffey capped its undefeated week by defeating Brownsville 16-1 in a four-inning Section 2-AA game Friday.
Meghan Shultz went 4-for-4 with a triple, three runs and an RBI, and Carae Wagner hit two doubles with two RBI for the Highlanders (7-0, 9-0), who won four section games this week after a 12-day layoff. The Falcons (5-4, 7-6) committed six errors.
• Southmoreland scored 10 runs on eight hits an scored five runs in the final two innings to defeat Chartiers-Houston 8-6 in a non-section game.
Briana Bunner had three RBI and Kyle Wisilosky hit a solo home run for the Scotties (8-2). Kayla Alderson doubled and drove in two runs for the Bucs (7-5), who scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
• Avella took advantage of nine walks and scored six runs in the second to defeat Cornell 10-8 in a rain-shortened five-inning non-section game.
Brooke Burchanti and Paige Allen doubled for the Eagles (2-8). Cornell is 4-9 overall.
