Baseball: Peters Township outslugs Bethel Park
Alex Mundy went 4-for-4 with a double, scored three runs and drove in three as Peters Township outslugged Bethel Park, 13-9, in a Section 4-AAAA high school baseball game Monday.
Matt Weigand and Adam Cisney both added three hits apiece for the Indians (6-3, 8-6), who knocked Bethel Park (6-2, 11-4) out of first place in the section. Weigand also doubled and drove in three runs, while Cisney tripled and drove in three as well to make a winner out of Nolan Thompson.
Bo Williams and Tyler Shoemaker both tripled, while Shane Fiorentini doubled for Bethel Park.
West Allegheny 1, Trinity 0: Logan Matalak scored on a balk in the top of the 10th inning as West Allegheny outlasted Trinity, 1-0, in a Section 3-AAA game.
Matalak reached on a single to right to lead off the 10th and was sacrificed to second before Jimmy Martin moved him to third on a single to left. Trinity reliever Logan Defillippo was then called for the balk to plate the winning run in what had been a pitcher’s duel to that point.
Trinity starter Nick Herrnberger threw nine shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five, while West Allegheny’s Michael Crawford nearly matched him with eight scoreless innings of four-hit pitching with nine strikeouts.
Chasen Claus and Jake Cunningham, who got the win with two scoreless innings of relief, both doubled for West Allegheny (4-3, 10-3).
Evan McDaniel tripled and Garrett Briant doubled for the Hillers (1-6, 4-9).
Avella 4, Cornell 2: Luke Lloyd threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Avella kept its playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 Section 5-A victory over Cornell.
Cody Dobbin had a two-run triple in a three-run third inning for the Eagles (3-4, 4-9), while Lloyd and Dalton Simonelli both had doubles.
Doug Welsh took the loss for Cornell (0-7, 0-11).
Beth-Center 10, Charleroi 1: Beth-Center scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was all the runs Lane Ziker would need as he threw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 10-1 Section 2-AA win over Charleroi.
Ziker and Hunter Bowen both had doubles for the Bulldogs (4-4, 4-5), who pulled within half a game of the Cougars (4-3, 7-4) for third place in the section. Tyle Zelenick and Dom Fundy had two hits each.
Sam Tager took the loss for Charleroi.
Chartiers Valley 11, McGuffey 0: Dante Panucci came up a triple short of hitting for the cycle and drove in four runs as Chartiers Valley avenged a loss last week to McGuffey, beating the Highlanders, 11-0, in a six-inning Section 3-AAA game.
Chartiers Valley (6-1, 11-3) had lost to McGuffey (1-6, 3-8), 5-4 last week.
Matt Novak had two doubles for McGuffey.
New Brighton 9, Burgettstown 0: R.J. Debo had a three-run double and allowed just four hits while striking out 10 as New Brighton pulled away late for a 9-0 Section 1-AA win over Burgettstown.
Collin Lohle added a double for New Brighton (6-2, 6-4), which didn’t score until putting up three runs in the top of the sixth against Burgettstown (1-8, 2-11) starter Sam Huggins.
Scott Ferris doubled for the Blue Devils.
South Side Beaver 14, Fort Cherry 13: If you like high-scoring baseball games, Fort Cherry was the place to be Monday.
The Rangers and South Side Beaver combined for 36 hits, 27 runs and three homers before SSB pulled out 14-13 victory by scoring five times in the top of the seventh inning.
Fort Cherry (3-6, 6-7), which had 21 hits, scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 13-9 lead. South Side (3-5, 6-5) took the lead in the seventh with the go-ahead run scoring on an error.
The Rangers had a chance to force extra innings but had a runner thrown out at home plate in the bottom of the seventh.
Fort Cherry’s Jacob Baird was 5-for-5 with a double and Cam Schaub was 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Greg Csonka homered and drove in two and Cole Clark doubled for the Rangers.
California 8, Jefferson-Morgan 2: California remained a half-game behind Section 1-A leader Bentworth by beating Jefferson-Morgan 8-2 at Malden Yards.
Johnny DeFranco led the offense for Cal (5-1, 11-2) by going 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and a run. Casey Zajicek hit two doubles and drove in a run, and Nathaniel Luketich doubled.
Winning pitcher Brandon Powell struck out six over five innings.
Jefferson-Morgan is 2-4, 5-6.
Carmichaels 12, West Greene 1: Carmichaels scored in every inning and moved closer to a playoff berth out of Section 1-A with a 12-1 five-inning victory over West Greene in Rogersville.
Joel Spishock led the offense for Carmichaels (3-3, 7-4) with a double, three RBI and three runs. Nick Mundell hit a solo homer, Darren Krause drove in three runs and Cody Brown had a two-run double.
That was more than enough support for winning pitcher Jacob Kinsell, who threw a three-hitter and struck out 12.
Mike Howard had a double for West Greene (3-4, 4-6), which had its three-game winning streak end.
South Fayette 9, Montour 3: For the second consecutive day, South Fayette used one big inning on offense and strong pitching throughout to get a victory.
The Lions scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to defeat Montour 8-3 in Section 3-AAA.
Spencer Barber capped the big first frame by hitting a home run in his second at-bat of the inning. Cam Hoover and Brett Wilner each had two-run singles in the first inning.
Winning pitcher Tristan Tinney threw six innings and struck out four. He also hit a triple.
Montour is 5-2, 9-3. The Spartans were knocked out of a first-place tie with Chartiers Valley.
Bentworth 8, Mapletown 0: Bentworth remained in first place in Section 1-A with a 9-0 victory at Mapletown.
Winning pitcher Taylor Bunner worked into the sixth inning and gave up only three hits with six strikeouts. Hunter Neely and Nick Silver each hit a double for the Bearcats (6-1, 8-3).
Belle Vernon 8, South Park 2: Belle Vernon had a 14-hit attack and Jacob Callaway struck out 12 in five innings of relief as Belle Vernon picked up a key Section 4-AAA win over visiting South Park, 8-2.
Evan Hannan hit two triples and scored three runs to lead the offense for Belle Vernon (6-3, 10-3). Josh Hofmann was 3-for-3 with a triple and Callaway doubled. Callaway allowed only one unearned run.
South Park is 5-5, 10-6.
