Softball: Monessen clinches playoff berth

Dana Vatakis threw a three-inning no-hitter with five strikeouts and also doubled Tuesday as Monessen clinched a playoff spot with a 16-0 Section 2-A win over Greesburg Central Catholic Tuesday.

Gabby Simpson and Tori Cooper also doubled for the Greyhounds (601, 11-4), who moved within a half game of first-place Frazier (6-1, 9-2) in the section standings.

Kristin Hickey took the loss for GCC (1-5, 2-6).

• Sarah Turek threw a five-inning no-hitter as Elizabeth Forward blanked Ringgold 14-0 in Section 3-AAA.

Turek struck out four and did not issue a walk. The only batter to reach base for Ringgold was Lauren Gohacki, who was hit by a pitch with two outs in the fourth inning.

Elizabeth Forward is 6-2 in section and 9-3 overall.
