Washington & Jefferson needed only 12 hits to sweep a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany, 2-0 and 4-2, Saturday afternoon.

W&J (13-7, 20-14) runs its winning streak to six. It marks the Presidents’ 12th 20-win season in the last 13 years.

Both of W&J’s runs came on solo homers, by Mark Merlino and Nick Vento. That was enough production for starting pitcher Trevor Kerr, who threw his first career shutout, a four-hitter. He improved his record to 5-1.

W&JH scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to win the second game. Riley Groves was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 6-2.

• Waynesburg swept a key Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Saint Vincent. The Yellow Jackets rebounded from an early 3-0 deficit to win the opener, 4-3, before cruising to a 4-1 win.

Waynesburg (12-9, 14-21) committed three first-inning errors that staked Saint Vincent (10-14, 17-20) to a three-run lead in the opener. Senior ace pitcher Brian Resnik was able to hold things together and keep Waynesburg in the game the rest of the way.

The Yellow Jackets scored single runs in the second and fifth innings, then took the lead in the sixth. A squeeze bunt by Tyler Rubasky tied the score at 3-3. Two batters later, Nathan Mori’s RBI-single gave Waynesburg the lead.

Resnik pitched a complete-game five-hitter and did not allow an earned run. The win improved his season record to 6-4 and was his 28th career victory, which ties the Burgettstown graduate with former Washington & Jefferson standout Eddie Nogay for the most in PAC history.

Resnik, a senior right-hander, walked one and struck out eight.

• California split a PSAC West doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown at Point Stadium, winning the opener 9-1 before losing 13-6.

Bobby Thompson doubled and drove in three runs in Cal’s win and Garrett Brooks was 3-for-3 with a double. GJ Senchak pitched a complete game.

UPJ (11-17, 18-27) scored nine runs in the fifth inning to win the second game. Mick Fennell was 3-for-4 with a double and triple for Cal (17-11, 26-20).
