W&J, Cal women win again
Danielle Parker and Amirah Moore combined for 45 points Saturday afternoon as Washington & Jefferson overcame a fast start by Westminster to defeat the visiting Titans 89-72 in a PAC game.
The win keeps W&J (3-0, 5-2) undefeated in conference play.
Parker scored a game-high 24 points, which included four three-point field goals, and Moore had 21 points and six assists.
Westminster (0-3, 4-4) raced to an early seven-point lead but W&J fought back and led 19-16 after one quarter and 43-34 at halftime.
Alyssa Riley came off the bench to score 12 points for the Presidents.
Brooke Lyczek led a balanced offense for Westminster with 15 points. Jackie Mathews contributed 14 points and Kylie Cook 12.
California 78, Shippensburg 56: Undefeated California, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, dominated the middle quarters and rolled to a 78-56 victory over Shippensburg in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.
California (5-0, 10-0) trailed 18-17 after the first quarter – only the second tmem the Vulcans have been outscored in a quarter all season – but took a 40-33 lead into halftime and increased the gap to 62-42 after three quarters.
Senior point guard Miki Glenn led four Cal players in double figures with 20 points and seven assists. Seairra Barrett followed with 17 points, Precious Martin had 14 and Abbey Sporio 13. The Vulcans had 22 assists on 31 field goals.
Morgan Griffith led Shippensburg (1-4, 5-4) with 14 points. The Raiders committed 26 turnovers.
Shippensburg 78, California 72: Dustin Sleva scored a game-high 24 points and made three of Shippensburg’s 11 three-point field goals as the undefeated Raiders edged upset-minded California 78-72 in a PSAC game.
California (0-5, 2-8) was hurt by losing freshman guard and leading scorer Ramon Creighton to an injury only four minutes into the game. Still, the Vulcans led 31-29 at halftime.
Shippensburg (5-0, 8-0) used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to forge a 59-52 advantage. The Raiders’ lead grew to as many as 11 points before a late flurry by Cal closed the gap to five in the final 10 seconds.
Cal made six more field goals than Shippensburg but the Raiders held a huge advantage at the free-throw line. Shippensburg made 19 of 26 free throws compared to Cal’s 2-for-3. The Raiders were called for only seven fouls.
Daniel Sapp and Nick Miller each scored 14 points for Cal. Tony Richardson had 13 points Logan Undjusic 11.
Westminster 62, Wash & Jeff 57: Washington & Jefferson played a strong second half but their comeback came up short as Westminster held on for a 62-57 win in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Henry Memorial Center.
Deontay Scott scored a game-high 19 points, and was 9-for-9 at the free-throw line, to lead Westminster (2-1, 5-3). The Titans led 32-18 at halftime before W&J closed to within six points (61-55) with 27 seconds remaining.
Brian Graytok scored 17 points for W&J (0-3, 0-8) and Brian Lindquist followed with 16. The Presidents hurt their comeback bid by making only eight of 17 free throws, including six of 13 in the second half.
Westminster had a big edge on the boards, outrebounding W&J 46-29.
