Boys basketball roundup: Brown scores 29 in Fort Cherry victory
Forward Devon Brown scored a game-high 29 points Wednesday night and powered Fort Cherry to a 66-57 victory over host Burgettstown in a non-section contest.
Fort Cherry (2-1) had a strong first half, forging a 36-21 lead by halftime. In addition to Brown, the Rangers received 12 points from Chad Colussy.
Burgettstown (0-3) was led by Robert Dupain, who scored 17 points and Ryan Lounder, who contributed 16 points.
Trinity 71, Bethel Park 64: Jaden Nelson scored a game-high 22 points to lead Trinity to a 71-64 victory over Bethel Park in a non-section game.
Joey Koroly poured in 14 points for the Hillers (2-1), who led 56-45 after three quarters.
Nick Bonar scored 15, alex Mullen 14 and Justin Meis 13 for Bethel Park (2-1).
California 82, Serra 68: Kass Taylor scored 28 points and hot-shooting California won at Serra Catholic 82-68 in a non-section game.
Taylor led four players in double figures for California (3-1). Johnny DeFranco scored 22 points, and Jaycee Conaway and Dylan Hammitt each tallied 12. The Trojans made eight three-pointers including six by DeFranco.
Malike Edmuson and Khalil Smith each scored 18 points for Serra (1-2).
Connellsville 51, Ringgold 45: The final surge and the victory went to Connellsville as the Falcons held off a Ringgold comeback and beat the host Rams 51-45 in a non-section game.
Connellsville (2-2) led 24-16 at halftime and 38-30 after three quarters. Ringgold (2-2) rallied in the final eight minutes and pulled even at 45-45 with less than two minutes remaining on two free throws by Anthony Pampena, who scored a game-high 22 points.
A Connellsville turnover gave Ringgold possession with 1:17 remaining but the Rams also committed a turnover. Connellsville then scored the game’s final six points.
Trayvon Clayton paced Connellsville with 19 points and Jake Tzan scored 11.
Beth-Center 67, Jefferson-Morgan 53: Brennan Stanley had a double-double and Beth-Center put four players in double figures as the Bulldogs defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan 67-53 in a non-section game.
Stanley, a senior forward, had team highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs (2-2). J.J. Green followed with 18 points, Andrew White had 12 and Nick Pryor 11.
Jalen Torres scored a game-high 24 points for Jefferson-Morgan (1-2), which led 32-30 at halftime. D.L. Garrett had 11 points for the Rockets.
Norwin 59, Monessen 56: Anthony Dellefemine scored a game-high 23 points as Norwin stopped Monessen 59-56 at the Franklin Regional Tournament. Norwin outscored Monessen, 35-26, over the second half.
Justice Rice scored 19 points and Jaden Altomore 16 for the Greyhounds (1-2), who play in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. today.
Bentworth 74, Mapletown 24: Four players scored in double figures to propel bentworth to a 74-24 win over Mapletown in a non-section game.
Levi Jordan led the way with 14, Steven Harner added 13, Will Bashioum popped in 12 and Ray Logan had 10 for the Bearcats (2-1).
Mapletown fell to 0-3.
Girls results
West Greene 69, Bentworth 23: McKenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor combined for 43 points and West Greene remained undefeated with a 69-23 victory over visiting Bentworth in a non-section game rescheduled from Tuesday.
Lampe led West Greene with 23 points, which included three three-point field goals. Rizor followed with a career-high 20 points and Madison Lampe scored 12 for the Pioneers, who improved to 3-0, with each victory by at least 40 points. West Greene led 53-10 at halftime.
Grace Marchezak led Bentworth (0-3) with seven points.
Canon-McMillan 66, Brownsville 38: Canon-McMillan made 10 three-pointers and had four players score in double figures during a 66-38 victory over visiting Brownsville in a non-section game.
Cheynne Trest led a balanced attack for Canon-McMillan (3-1) with 14 points. Tamara Mathis followed with 12 points, Lindsay Beach had 11 and Kierra King 10. The Big Macs took control of the game early, building a 39-14 lead at halftimne.
Only three players scored for Brownsville (1-3). Alie Seto and Lyric Mosley each had 18 points.
Clairton 49, Jefferson-Morgan 40: Kaylisha Reeves scored 20 points to send Clairton past Jefferson-Morgan 49-40 in a non-section match.
Clairton (2-2) outrebounded the Rockets (2-2) 40-23. Anna Mattish led J-M with 21 points.
SS Beaver 45, Burgettstown 43: Lex Chickarello scored 22 points, including 18 on three-point field goals, as South side Beaver held off a rally by Burgettstown in the fourth quarter for a 45-43 win in a non-section game.
Jess Barber added 10 points for the visitin Rams (2-1).
Kacie Prasko scored 15 points and younger sister Emily add 12 for the Blue devils (2-1), who had a chance to tie or win but a corner shot at the buzzer missed.
Albert Gallatin 49, Waynesburg 26: Kylee Meyers scored 16 points to send Albert gallatin past Waynesburg 49-26 in a non-section game.
Albert Gallatin (3-1) outscored the Raiders (0-3) by 22-8 over the final quarter.
Claire Garber scored 11 points and Shay Echegaray had nine rebounds and her sister Bree seven.
In other games: Carmichaels won its initial road game of the season, defeating Geible Catholic 52-44 in Connellsville. Albert Gallatin cruised to 78-37 victory over visiting Waynesburg. No game detaisl were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
