Big signing: Wild Things get baseball’s tallest pitcher
The Washington Wild Things announced Monday they have signed the tallest player in professional baseball, Cole Way, a left-handed relief pitcher, who is 6-11 and played college football.
Way, an Oklahoma native, had a unique path to professional baseball. He was a standout athlete in high school and played multiple sports. He attended the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship but the school does not have a baseball program. Way was Tulsa’s kicker and punter, and following several private workouts with professional baseball scouts was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 38th round of the 2014 draft.
He spent three years at the rookie level in the Royals’ system, pitching in 28 games including 18 this past season. Released by the Royals in November, Way has 49 career strikeouts in 53 innings.
“It is impossible to ignore Cole’s stature and unique journey in baseball, but what might be more impressive is the character and determination he possesses,” Wild Things general manager Steve Zavacky said. “His successful transition to professional baseball speaks to his hard work and dedication on the field. Off the field, he has continued his focus remaining actively involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other community programs. We look forward to seeing Cole showcase his abilities out of the bullpen.”
