Girls basketball roundup: Peters Township deals South Fayette first loss

Alexandra Zaccarini scored half of her 10 points in the pivotal fourth quarter Monday night and pulled away for a 41-36 victory over host South Fayette, dealing the Lions their first loss of the season.

The teams were locked in a 31-31 tie after three quarters before Peters Township (3-2) held South Fayette (3-1) to only five points over the final eight minutes in the non-section contest.

Alyssa Konopka scored a team-leading 11 points for Peters Township. Mura Castolucci led South Fayette with 12 points.

Washington 56, New Brighton 15: Carley Allen scored 19 points and Washington opened Section 1-AA play with an easy 56-15 victory over visiting New Brighton.

Wash High (1-0, 3-2) led 15-1 after one quarter and 32-6 at halftime against the Lions (0-1, 0-5), who were held to just three field goals in the game.

Torri Finley was the only other Wash High player to net double figures as she finished with 10 points.

West Greene 66, Clairton 52: West Greene continued its undefeated start by surviving upset-minded Clairton and defeating the host bears in a free-throwfest, 66-52.

There were 81 free throws attempted in the game, 42 by Clairton and 39 by West Greene.

Madison Lampe scored a career-high 26 points to lead the way for West Greene (5-0), which led 27-24 at halftime. Kaitlyn Rizor followed with 19 points and McKenna Lampe contributed 14 as the Pioneers made 18 of their 39 free throws.

Chartiers Valley 71, Canon-McMillan 63: Chartiers Valley overcame a strong finishing effort from Canon-McMillan and Cheyanne Trest to beat the Big Macs, 71-63, in double overtime in a non-section game.

Trest had 13 points in a 16-9 run to close the game and send it into overtime for the Bug Macs (3-2). Trest added seven points in overtime, including a basket at the end of the first OT to extend the game. She finished with 30 points, while Tamara Mathis added 19 for Canon-McMillan.

Mackenzie Wagner 23 points, Gabby Legister had 22 and Lauren Wagner had 13 for Chartiers Valley (4-2).

Charleroi 67, South Allegheny 46: Sierra Short scored 19 points to help Charleroi to a 67-46 Section 2-AAA victory over South Allegheny.

Maria Claybaugh had 17 points and Kaitlyn Riley added 13 for the Cougars (1-0, 4-1), who led 23-9 after one quarter.

Sydney Kirkwood led South Allegheny (0-1, 3-1) with 21 points.

Trinity 62, Connellsville 20: Sierra Kotchman and Riley DeRubbo scored 15 points each as unbeaten Trinity opened Section 3 5-A play with a 62-20 win over Connellsville.

Alayna Cappelli added 12 points for the Hillers (1-0, 5-0), who outscored Connellsville (0-1, 2-4) 20-3 in the third quarter.

Molly Bouer led the Falcons with nine points.

Burgettstown 58, Shenango 32: Burgettstown went on an 18-2 run to open the second half and pick up a 58-32 Section 1-AA win over Shenango.

Elle Havelka scored 12 points and Casey Prasko had 11 for the Blue Devils (1-0, 4-1).

Abby George led Shenango (0-1, 2-4) with 14 points.

Cameron W.Va. 59, Mapletown 20: Kelsie Neintel scored 16 points and Cameron, W.Va., jumped out to a 33-2 halftime lead en route to a 59-20 non-section win over Mapletown.

Courtney Walker added 12 points for Cameron.

Abby Antill and Hannah Dingle led the Maples (1-5) with six points each.

Frazier 71, Beth-Center 56: Brooke Poling scored 25 points as Frazier steadily pulled away from Beth-Center for a 71-56 Section 3-AA win.

Hannah Fell added 17 points and Jovanna Isaac had 10 for the Commodores (1-0, 2-2).

Kinlee Whited and Olivia Greco had 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Beth-Center (0-1, 2-1).

California 57. Serra Catholic 40: Dominque Gaston had 19 points as California defeated Serra Catholic, 57-40, in a Section 3-AA game.

Bailey Vig added 14 points and Jen Miller had 12 for the Trojans (1-0, 4-0).

Rayne Andrews led Serra (0-1, 2-2) with 17 points.

St. Joseph 64, Jefferson-Morgan 30: Senior guard Lizzy Celko scored 28 points and St. Joseph snapped a four-game losing streak with a 64-30 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section contest.

St. Joseph (2-4) started fast, forging a 20-4 lead after one quarter. Chloe Kurpakus was the only other St. Joseph player to score in double figures as she had 12 points.

Anna Mattish’s nine points led Jefferson-Morgan, which fell to the .500 mark with a 3-3 record.

Fort Cherry 44, Aliquippa 25: Kenzie Garry scored 16 points and Shannon Relihan had a double-double as Fort Cherry won its Section 1-AA opener, beating visiting Aliquippa 44-25.

Relihan finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and the Rangers’ Bre Shaffer contributed 10 points and eight assists. Fort Cherry (1-0, 30-2) led 16-9 at halftime and broke the game open in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Quips (0-1, 1-4) 18-8.

Avella 46, McGuffey 41: Grace Langauer continued her strong start to the season by scoring 16 points and leading Avella to a 46-41 victory over visiting McGuffey in a non-section game.

Avella (3-3) won its second in a row despite making only 12 of 39 free throws. Langauer helped the Eagles battle back from a four-point deficit after the first quarter.

McGuffey’s dropped to 0-5.

Greensburg Central Catholic 54, Carmichaels 22: Greensburg Central Catholic used a big first quarter and a 170-point performance by Brittany Stawoy to beat host Carmichaels 54-22 in a non-section play.

GCC (2-2) led 27-5 after the first quarter and sent Carmichaels back to the .500 mark at 3-3.
