Cappelli leads Trinity to rout of Albert Gallatin
Trinity’s Alayna Cappelli led all scorers with 20 points as the Hillers defeated Albert Gallatin 64-22 in a Section 3-5A high school girls basketball game Thursday night.
Cappelli, along with 19 points from senior guard Sierra Kotchman balanced the Trinity (2-0, 6-1) attack, which outscored the Colonials in each of the four quarters.
Kylee Myers’ nine points was a team-high for Albert Gallatin.
Chartiers-Houston 56, Washington 19: Forward Alexa Williamson led Chartiers-Houston with 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Bucs defeated Washington, 56-19, in a Section 1-AA matchup.
C-H (2-0, 5-1) held the Prexies scoreless in the first quarter, building up a 15-0 lead after the first eight minutes.
Guard Jala Walker was the only other player to score in double figures for the Bucs with 12 points.
Torri Finley led the Wash High (1-1, 3-3) with nine points, while Carly Allen had eight.
Beth-Center 46, Carmichaels 27: Junior Kinlee Whited scored a game-high 22 points as Beth-Center defeated Section 3-AA opponent Carmichaels, 46-27.
B-C (1-1, 4-1) outscored Carmichaels in the second quarter by 11 points to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs did not allow Carmichaels (0-2, 3-4) back into the game by outscoring the Mikes in each of the final two quarters.
Megan Walker led Carmichaels with 12 points.
Avella 46, Waynesburg 18: An 11-point performance from Avella’s Brayden Tarolli sparked a 46-18 victory over non-section opponent Waynesburg.
Avella (4-3) didn’t allow Waynesburg (0-5) to score more than eight points in a single quarter.
Fort Cherry 46, New Brighton 22: McKenzie Faure scored 10 points as Fort Cherry remained undefeated in Section 1-AA by beating New Brighton, 46-22.
Fort Cherry (2-0, 4-2) built a 15-3 advantage after the first quarter, a lead it would fail to surrender for the remainder of the night.
New Brighton’s Libby Thomas scored a team-high 11 points.
Charleroi 40, Brownsville 24: Sierra Short scored eight of her nine points in the decisive second half as Charleroi pulled away from Brownsville, 40-24, in a Section 2-AAA game.
Maria Claybaugh led the Cougars (2-0, 5-1) with 13 points. Charleroi led just 19-17 at the half before limiting Brownsville (0-2, 2-6) to just seven points in the final two quarters.
California 59, Jeannette 17: Dominique Gaston scored 18 points as California raced to a 59-17 Section 3-AA win over Jeannette.
Marissa Bitonii added 15 points and 12 rebounds for California (2-0, 6-0), which limited the Jayhawks to two combined points in the second and third quarters.
Olivia Sirnic had 15 of the 17 points for Jeannette (1-1, 2-2).
OLSH 48, Burgettstown 29: Jocelyn Nagy’s 18 points helped Our Lady of Sacred Heart defeated Burgettstown, 48-29, in a Section 1-AA game.
Ashley Norling added 16 points for OLSH (1-1, 3-2), which tool control of the game with a 15-4 run in the second quarter.
Emily Prasko scored 12 points to lead Burgettstown (1-1, 4-2).
South Allegheny 36, McGuffey 13: Sydney Kirkwood’s 12 points led South Allegheny to a 36-13 Section 2-AAA win over McGuffey.
South Allegheny (1-1, 4-1) led 29-5 at the half.
Emily Durila had six points for McGuffey (0-1, 0-6).
Belle Vernon 66, Southmoreland 44: Keira Boff hit five three-pointers to finish with 15 points to lead Belle Vernon to a 66-44 Section 3-AAAA win over Southmoreland.
Ashley Russell added 12 points and Lindsay Steeber added 11 for Belle Vernon (2-0, 5-2).
Olivia Porter scored 16 points for Southmoreland (0-2, 4-2), which got 10 assists, nine steals and 10 rebounds from Kelsey Green.
Boys basketball
Brownsville 67, West Greene 52: Shandon Marshall scored 18 points and Brownsville pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 67-52 non-section win over West Greene.
The Pioneers (4-2) pulled to within 45-41 by scoring the first six points on the fourth quarter, but Brownsville (5-1) closed the game on a 22-9 run to pull away.
James Holcomb and Jake McCormick scored 12 points each for Brownsville.
Craig Weaver had 21 points, Nathan Brudnock 12 and Kolton Rush 11 for West Greene.
Bentworth 63, Jefferson-Morgan 61: Levi Jordan scored 28 points and had 17 rebounds as Bentworth overcame a furious Jefferson-Morgan rally to hand the Rockets a 63-61 Section 2-AA defeat.
The Bearcats (1-1, 4-2) led 32-17 at the half, only to see the Rockets (0-2, 2-4) grab a five-point lead with three minutes remaining in the game.
But a three-pointer by Jordan gave Bentworth the lead with under one minute to play, and Steven Harner, who scored 12 points, knocked down four free throws in the final seconds to clinch the win. Jacob Davis added 11 points for the Bearcats.
Jalin Torres scored 14 points and D.J. Garrett had 22 for the Rockets to fuel the comeback.
Charleroi 50, Burgettstown 42: Sam Micelli scored a game-high 21 points to give Charleroi a 50-42 Section 4-AAA opening win over host Burgettstown.
Charleroi (1-0, 3-3) went to the free-throw line 26 times, converting on 19. Dremar Everette also scored 16 points for the Cougars.
Burgettstown (0-2, 0-5), which was led by Ryan Lounder’s 11 points, is off to its worst start since the 1997-98 season.
