Boys basketball roundup: McGuffeymoes to 8-0, will play for title
Trent Belleville had 18 points as unbeaten McGuffey advanced to the championship game of the Avella Tournament with a 50-32 win over Carlynton in a high school boys basketball game Thursday.
Andrew Allender had seven assists for the Highlanders (8-0), who opened the second half on a 14-5 run to put the game away.
Courtney Mickens had 12 points for Carlynton (4-3).
Avella 66, Freedom 47: Steven Miller scored a game-high 22 points and Avella picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Freedom 66-47 in the consolation round of the Eagles’ eight-team tournament.
Avella (1-4) led 13-11 after one quarter then took control of the game by outscoring Freedom (2-5) by a 14-6 margin in the second quarter and scoring 22 points in the third quarter.
Garrett Geresti followed Miller in scoring with 17 points and grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds. Shawn Willard had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Avella will play South Side Beaver at 4:15 p.m. today.
First Love 78, Virginia Episcopal Academy 64: After winning two games at the Aliquippa tournament, First Love Christian Academy won its third contest in as many nights by defeating Virginia Episcopal Academy 78-64 in the Battle at the Armory in Beckley, W.Va.
David Collins led First Love (7-1) with 24 points. Shamar Givance had a double-double with 18 points and 13 assists, and Dylan Morrison had 17.
Central Valley 71, Monessen 69: Parker Hudson banked in a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to give Central Valley a 71-69 victory over Monessen in the C.J. Betters Tournament at the Community College of Beaver County Dome.
Hudson finished with 24 points to lead Central Valley.
Justice Rice had 23 points, Lyndon Henderson 15 and Jaden Altomore 14 for Monessen, which plays Beaver Falls at 5:30 p.m. today.
