Rough day for local teams at Otterbein
Kelvin Jones scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half Thursday as Hiram pulled away for a 74-59 victory over Waynesburg in the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio, which is hosted by Otterbein.
Hiram (4-6) led 30-28 at halftime and Jones sparked a big second half for the Terriers, who shot 59 percent after the intermission. The Terriers outscored Waynesburg 22-8 in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Paul Ortiz scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half for Hiram.
Waynesburg shot only 37 percent for the game and made just one of 14 three-pointers.
Nick Valentic, a freshman from Peters Township, came off the bench and was the Yellow Jackets’ leading scorer with 11 points. Jon Knab followed with 10.
Waynesburg will play Otterbein at 7 p.m. tonight.
Otterbein 71, Wash & Jeff 55: Bryan Mackenzie scored 16 points and made four of Otterbein’s 11 three-point field goals as the Cardinals defeated Washington & Jefferson 71-55 at the Smokey Ballenger Classic.
A 17-4 run in the first half gave Otterbein (4-6) control of the game early and the Cardinals led by as many as 18 points in the first half. Otterbein made 11 of 21 three-point shots in the game and shot 47 percent from the field.
Matt Hughes and Cameron Arminio each scored 15 points and Nick Nossman had 10 for Otterbein.
Brian Lindquist had a big game for W&J (0-9), scoring a game-high 17 points with five rebounds.
W&J will play Hiram at 3 p.m. today.
Women’s results
Catholic 76, Wash & Jeff 64: Catholic held Washington & Jefferson to nine second-half field goals and pulled away for a 76-64 victory in the first round of the Cardinals’ holiday tournament.
Catholic (9-1) led 41-38 at halftime but held W&J (5-4) to only nine points in the third quarter and opened a 56-47 lead.
Payton Smith led Catholic with 19 points, Michelle DeSantis had 15 and seven assists, and Melissa Errico scored 11.
Taley Dunaway came off the bench to lead W&J in scoring with 16 points. She was 4-for-5 from three-point range. Danielle Parker followed with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Amirah Moore had 13 points and six steals.
Albion 90, Waynesburg 58: Albion broke open a close game in the second half and cruised to a 90-58 victory over Waynesburg at the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio.
Albion (7-3) used a 7-0 run late in the first half to open a 39-28 lead at the break, then outscored the Yellow Jackets 51-30 in the second half. Albion shot 59 percent from the field in the second half.
Oreyana Curry led five Albion players in double figures with 20 points.
Addy Knetzer scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Waynesburg (6-4). Katie Gehlmann also scored 14 points. The Yellow Jackets committed 24 turnovers.
