California women win in overtime

Junior point guard Miki Glenn made a three-pointer that forced overtime and scored five of her 18 points in the final 2:09 Wednesday night to lift California to a 79-73 win over West Chester in a PSAC women’s basketball game at the Convocation Center.

California (7-2, 9-3) bounced back from a buzzer-beating loss Sunday East Stroudsburg but needed Glenn’s three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime against the Rams (5-4, 8-5), who erased a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit.

After a first half in which neither team led by more than four points, Cal played a strong third quarter and forged a 55-40 lead early in the fourth quarter. West Chester then used a 17-4 run to take a 65-62 after two free throws by Dallas Ely with 13 seconds left in regulation. Glenn’s three-pointer, however, forced the extra session tied at 65-65.

Cal took the lead for good at 72-71 on a Glenn jump shot with 2:09 remaining. The Vulcans then received a basket by Seairra Barrett, who led Cal with 21 points, and made five free throws in the final 42 seconds.

Shatara Parsons scored 15 points for Cal and Emily Suckling came off the bench to score 11.

Brittany Sicinski scored a game-high 27 points for West Chester, which was only 1-for-14 from three-point range.

Waynesburg 79, Saint Vincent 63: Sophomore forward Addy Knetzer scored a game-high 25 points and Waynebsurg broke open a close game by scoring 51 second-half points en route to a 79-63 victory over visiting Saint Vicnent in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Kentzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, made nine of 11 shots from the field, seven of nine free throws and also hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds.

Waynesburg (3-2, 5-7) started fast, building a 13-2 lead five minutes into the game. Saint Vincent (2-3, 7-5), which had its four-game winning streak snapped, battled back and tied the score in the second quarter before Waynesburg took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets then took control with a 13-0 run to start the second half. Katie Gehlmann started the half with a three-pointer and her layup gave Waynesburg a 41-27 lead. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 19 points in the second half.

Gehlmann finished with 17 points, Lauren Blair had 16 and Maura Bobby 13 for Waynesburg.

Saint Vincent, which shot only 26 percent but made 20 of 21 free throws, was led by Mara Benvenuti’s 20 points.

Wash & Jeff 76, Geneva 63: Beka Bellhy scored a game-high 24 points and Taylor Cortazzo scored all five of her points in a pivotal stretch of the fourth quarter as Washington & Jefferson pulled away late to defeat visiting Geneva 76-63 in a PAC game.

W&J (4-0, 10-2) remains tied with Thomas More for first place in the PAC. The Presidents play Saturday at No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Thomas More (4-0, 10-0).

The Presidents had to overcome a sluggish start against Geneva (3-1, 6-5). The Golden Torandoes led 22-13 after one quarter but W&J battled back to take a 31-28 halftime lead. The Presidents used a 9-0 to open a 38-28 advantage before Geneva closed to within 50-48 heading into the fourth quarter.

W&J then took control with a 12-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter to build a 66-55 advantage. Cortazzo scored all five of her points during the run, which began with a three-point play by Bellhy.

Rachel Bellhy scored 13 points, Danielle Parker had 12 and Ashley Mikelonis had 10 for W&J.

Heidi Mann’s 17 points topped Geneva’s scorers.

West Chester 81, California 67: Mike Wilson scored 15 points and led five West Chester players in double figures as the Rams defeated California 81-67 in a PSAC game at the Convocation Center.

West Chester (8-1, 12-1), the leader in the East Division, did much of its damage from long range. The Rams made 13 of 30 three-pointers, which helped them build a 31-21 lead at halftime.

Thomas White had a double-double for WC with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

California (3-6, 5-9) was led by Khalil Jabbie’s 19 points. Richard Smith had 15 and Nick Miller came off the bench to score 10.

Saint Vincent 75, Waynesburg 61: Jaylon Bell scored 27 points and PAC leader Saint Vincent pulled away over the final eight minutes to defeat host Waynesburg 75-61.

Saint Vincent (5-0, 9-3) led 36-28 at halftime but Waynesburg used a 7-0 run, capped by a layup from B.J. Durham, to take a 45-43 lead with 12:12 remaining.

Waynesburg still led, 53-52, with 9:09 remaining before Saint Vincent put together a decisive 21-2 run over the next 5½ minutes that opened up a 73-55 lead for the Bearcats. Bell scored eight points during the spurt.

Durham led Waynesburg (2-2, 2-9) with 21 points. D.J. Ritchie followed with 15 points.

Geneva 78, wash & Jeff 70: Chase Vaudrin and Ethan Adamczyk combined for 44 points as Geneva kept Washington & Jefferson winless with as 78-70 victory in a PAC game at Henry Memorial Center.

The win was the first of the season for Geneva (1-4, 1-11). The Golden Torandoes led 36-22 at halftime but W&J rallied and took a 54-51 lead with 8:15 to play. Geneva, however, scored 16 of the next 21 points, with Adamczyk contributing eight, to pull away down the stretch.

Vaudrin finished with 24 points and Adamczyk had 20.

Chase Rohaus scored 15 of his team-high 22 points in the second half for W&J (0-5, 0-12). Brian Lindquist had 17 points, Brian Graytok scored 12 and Kodie Hanley 10.
