Wrestling rerun: C-M, Waynesburg meet again

If nothing else, the Tri-CADA Wrestling Tournament gave fans a preview of what tonight’s dual meet between Canon-McMillan and Waynesburg might be like.
Six times in the winners’ bracket, wrestlers from Canon-McMillan and Waynesburg competed against each another, including three in the finals.
The Big Macs won the team tournament title from Waynesburg, the defending champion, by seven points.
The atmosphere will be different tonight when a large crowd is sure to pack the Canon-McMillan gymnasium for this Section 4-A showdown between the two Class AAA powers.
Both teams are 2-0 in the section and the winner will most likely wrap up the top spot in the subsection, and be favored to win the section title.
“I think it will be another close one,” said Canon-McMillan head coach Jason Cardillo. “It always is.”
The Big Macs were without three starters for the Tri-CADA tournament: Declan Lewis, a 152-pound senior; Micah Kusturiss, a 160-pound senior; and Tommy James, a 182-pound junior. They are questionable to probable for the bout.
Junior Matt Oblock decisioned Waynesburg’s Cole Rush in the 126-pound semifinals; sophomore Tim Hritsko dropped a 3-0 decision to Waynesburg’s Logan Henderson in the 132-pound finals; and senior James Zeremenko, filling in for James, lost a 3-2 decision to Waynesburg’s Colin McCracken in the 182-pound finals.
“Matt wrestled (Rush) twice and it’s hard any time you wrestle somebody to keep beating him,” said Cardillo. “Tim is only in his fifth match back (from injury), so he is getting mat time and hopefully, we can close the gap and reverse the outcome of that match. Zeremenko wrestled a nice match. It’s his first match down from 195.”
Waynesburg head coach Joe Throckmorton said he tries to concern himself more with his wrestlers development than taking notes on Canon-McMillan in the Tri-CADA.
“If we’re able to wrestle the matches and wrestle our style, then you don’t have to worry so much what they are going to do. We both had nine in the finals, so we got a look at that. I love exciting matches. I hope there is a big crowd in Canonsburg. There are always a lot of people there I know and it’s a great rivalry. It’s always fun for those matches.”
Waynesburg is strong through the middle with a string of talented wrestlers in Henderson, Shaun Wilson (138), Trey Howard (145), Terry Victor (152) and Kyle Homet (160). McCracken is the anchor at 182.
“These matches are always competitive and always come down to the wire,” said McCracken. “It’s going to be a good match.”
Logan Macri, a 120-pound sophomore, pinned Waynesburg freshman Colby Morris in the 113-pound finals.
“I was just thinking that I have to wrestle him again in three days,” Macri said. “You wrestle the same guys over and over. That’s the life of a wrestler.”
