Peters Twp. bounces back; J-M’s winning streak at 10

Madison Kerr scored seven points and Makenna Marisa scored four as Peters Township jumped out to an 11-1 first-quarter lead en route to a 46-21 Section 4-AAAA girls basketball victory over Baldwin Thursday night.

Kerr scored 18 points and Marissa 12 as the Indians shook off a loss Monday night to Canon-McMillan to improve to 6-2 in section play and 13-2 overall.

Lauren Gilbert had nine points for Baldwin (5-3, 10-5), which fell into a fourth-place tie with Mt. Lebanon in the section.

Jefferson-Morgan 77, Monessen 20: Section 3-A leader Jefferson-Morgan extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 77-20 victory over visiting Monessen.

J-M (8-0, 13-1) scored 45 first-half points and made 10 three-pointers in the game. Kayla Yorko scored a game-high 23 points, including five behind the three-point stripe, to lead the Rockets, who forged a 45-9 lead by halftime.

Nicole Venick followed with 19 points and sophomore Anna Mattish gave the Rockets three players in doduble figures with 11 points.

Marqula Green, with eight points, was the leading scorer for Monessen (0-8, 1-13) with eight points.

Canon-McMillan 61, Upper St. Clair 46: Cheyanne Trest had 18 points and Becca Turney had 17 as Canon-McMillan outlasted Upper St. Clair, 61-46, in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Taylor Waller added 10 points for the Big Macs (6-2, 9-5), who led 18-5 after one quarter only to see Upper St. Clair (2-6, 4-10) storm back to cut the lead to 32-26 at the half on the strength of six second quarter three-pointers.

Ally Steve led USC with 14 points, while Mira Fontana had 10.

Washington 67, Waynesburg 46: Washington bounced back from its first Section 4-AA loss by forging an big lead early against visiting Waynesburg and cruising to a 67-46 victory.

Washington (6-1, 11-4) started quickly and outscored Waynesburg 19-3 in the first quarter. The Prexies led 38-13 at halftime.

Wash High put nine players in the scoring column, led by Tajah Gordon with 17 points. Tori Finley, who scored 10 points, was the only other Wash High player in double figures.

The win keeps Washington tied with Charleroi and Frazier for the section lead.

Celine Monica paced Waynesburg (3-4, 5-7) with a game-high 23 points. She made 10 of 11 free throws. Kirsten Garber followed with 16 points.

Frazier 57, Bentworth 27: Brooke Poling scored 16 points and Frazier won its fifth in a row to stay tied for first place in Section 4-AA with a 57-27 victory over host Bentworth.

Frazier (6-1, 9-5) held Bentworth (0-7, 2-12) to only two first-quarter points and led 29-13 at halftime. The Commodores received 11 points from Hannah Fell.

Heather Chester’s eight points led Bentworth.

Chartiers-Houston 51, Steel Valley 21: Jala Walker’s 22 points led Chartiers-Houston to a 51-21 victory over Steel Valley in a Section 3-AA game.

Cassidy Stollar chipped in 10 points for the Bucs (5-2, 12-3), who outscored Steel Valley (2-5, 3-11) 27-3 in the second half.

Morgan Farrah had 10 points for Steel Valley.

Charleroi 59, Beth-Center 32: Adrianna Gottheld led a balanced scoring effort with 16 points as Charleroi pulled away from Beth-Center for a 59-32 Section 4-AA win.

Maria Claybaugh had 15 points, Aislyn Lee had 12 points and eight assists and Kaitlyn Riley 11 points for the Cougars (6-1, 11-5).

Kinlee Whited had 9 points to lead Beth-Center (2-5, 4-8).

Avella 42, Mapletown 39: Joelle Gossett scored nine of her 12 points in the pivotal fourth quarter and Avella took advantage of Mapletown’s foul trouble to rally and defeat the visiting Maples 42-39 in Section 3-A.

Avella (4-4, 6-7) trailed 19-10 at halftime and 26-19 after three quarters. The Eagles, however, outscored Mapletown 23-13 over the final eight minutes.

Mapletown lost two post players to fouls, one late in the third quarter and the other early in the fourth, which took away most of the Maples’ height advantage. Avella then went inside in the fourth quarter and it sparked the comeback.

Gossett was the only Avella player to score in double figures. Braydon Tarolli had nine points for the Eagles, who have won four of their last five games.

Hannah Dusenberry scored a game-high 18 points for Mapletown (2-6, 3-11) and made her fourth three-pointer as time expired. The Maples hurt their cause by making only nine of 24 free throws.

California 64, Geibel Catholic 29: Bailey Vig led a balanced offense for California with 15 points as the Trojans overcame a slow start and defeated Geibel Catholic 64-29 in a Section 3-A game in Connellsville.

California (7-1, 9-5), which had five players score in double figures, remains one game behind section-leader Jefferson-Morgan.

Jenna Miller scored 11 points for California, and Love Porter, Grace Roberts and Dominique Gaston each had 10. The Trojans led 9-6 after one quarter, then blitzed Geibel (2-6, 4-10) 39-12 over the next two quarters.

Grace Nowicki scored a game-high 16 points for the Gators.

Quaker Valley 75, McGuffey 54: Quaker Valley’s Aria Alton-Smith and Alayna Davidson were too much for host McGuffey as the Quakers won 75-54 in Section 5-AAA.

Davidson scored a game-high 32 points and Alton-Smith followed with 25 as Quaker Valley (2-5, 6-9) took control early and led 40-21 at halftime.

Katie Demi led McGuffey (0-7, 1-13) with 24 points.

West Greene 60, Fort Cherry 21: McKenna Lampe had 19 points as West Greene overwhelmed Fort Cherry, 60-21, in a Section 4-A game.

Caitlyn Rizor added 14 points and Madison Lampe 10 for the Pioneers (6-2, 12-3).

Shannon Relihan scored 11 points to lead Fort Cherry (3-5, 4-10).

Boys result

Avella 64, Mapletown 45: Shawn Willard had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Avella to a 64-45 victory over visiting Mapletown in Section 3-A.

Avella (4-2, 5-8), which moved into third place in the section, led 23-8 after one quarter and 39-20 at halftime. Coddy Dobbins scored 14 points and Kevin Painter had 12 for the Eagles. Both players made three three-pointers.

Riley Seward matched Willard for game-scoring honors with 16 points. Cody Dice had 12 points and Alix Gennette 11.
