Cal women get dramatic win over Mercyhurst

Sophomore forward Seairra Barrett’s jump shot with five seconds remaining gave California a 76-74 win over Mercyhurst in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.

The Lakers (7-7, 9-11) tied the score, 74-74, with 31 seconds remaining on a jump shot by Angela Heintz, who finished with a game-high 25 points. After a timeout by Cal, Barrett’s shot gave the Vulcans (10-4, 12-5) the lead and Shatara Parsons blocked a shot with two seconds remaining to secure the win. Junior guard Miki Glenn scored a career-high 36 points for Cal on 11 of 17 shooting, and she was 13 of 13 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds, two assists and six steals.

Glenn scored 21 points in the first half to help Cal grab a three-point lead. Barrett added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Vulcans, who saw an eight-point lead evaporate in the second quarter and shot 50 percent from the field.

Mercyhurst allowed 32 points in the paint and Cal got 26 points off turnovers. It was the Vulcans’ seventh game this season that was determined by less than 10 points.

Washington & Jefferson 59, Grove City 55: Washington & Jefferson led by four points at halftime and made 5 of 8 free throws in the final 90 seconds to secure a 59-55 win over Grove City in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game on the road.

The Presidents (9-1, 14-3) trailed by eight points after the first quarter, but guard Amirah Moore scored six of her 12 points in the second quarter to held W&J forge the halftime lead. Rachel Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, scored all of her game-high 14 points in the second half for the Presidents, who shot just 31.7 percent from the field and made 18 of 23 free throws. Bellhy had seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals, and Dannie Medovich had 10 points.

Grove City (5-5, 7-10) had four double-digit scorers with Kathryn Erbelding leading the way with 12 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. The Wolverines missed 16 three-point attempts.

Men’s Results

Mercyhurst 52, California 42: A nine-minute scoreless streak in the second half was responsible for Cal’s 52-42 loss to Mercyhurst in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.

The Vulcans (4-9, 7-12) before hitting the scoring drought.

Damon Jones was the lone scorer in double figures with 11 points for the Lakers, who had only 17 baskets. Mercyhurst sank 14 of 18 free throw attempts.

Luke Andjusic paced Cal with 11 points and Richard Smith chipped in with 10. Nate Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, had nine points and nine rebounds.

Mercyhurst scored 18 points off Cal’s 18 turnovers and the two teams combined to make just 9 of 36 three-point field goals.

Grove City 85, Wash & Jeff 61: Joe Vermilya scored 20 points, including 18 from three-point range, to help Grove City defeat Washington & Jefferson, 85-61, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Caleb Knudson and Brandon Grider each scored 11 points for the Wolverines (6-3, 11-5), who led by as many as 27 points in the game. Corey Smith added 10 points for Grove City, which used 13 players and shot 48 percent (32-for-67) from the field.

Brian Graytok led W&J (0-9, 0-16) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Lindquist also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Joel Garcia and Adam Joyce each scored 13 points.
