Trinity scores big victory over West Allegheny

Trinity rallied from a first-quarter deficit, outscoring West Allegheny by 15 points over the final three quarters on the way to a 62-50 win in Section 5-AAA.
The win puts the Hillers (7-3, 9-7) within 1 ½ games of section-leader West Allegheny (9-2, 10-9) and keeps them tied with South Fayette (7-3, 10-7) for second place.
Trinity’s Joey Koroly led all scorers with 24 points and Ben Phillis added 16 points. The Hillers trailed 10-7 after the first quarter but took a 26-21 lead at halftime. The Hillers outscored WA, 36-29, over the final two quarters.
Alijah Crowe scored 15 points and Ken White 13 for West Allegheny.
Washington 60, Chartiers-Houston 45: Matt Popeck and Nate Swart combined for 44 points as Washington set up a showdown in Section 3-AA with a 60-45 victory at Chartiers-Houston.
Washington (10-1, 13-5) extended its winning streak to 10 games heading into a game Monday at section-leader Bishop Canevin. The Prexies trail Bishop Canevin by one game in the standings.
Popeck led Wash High’s offense against C-H as he scored a game-high 26 points. Swart also was a force on offense as he chipped in with 18 points.
A.J. Myers again led Chartiers-Houston (4-8, 10-9) with 23 points. Andrew Clark followed with 14 but the Prexies’ defense held the rest of the Bucs to only eight points.
South Fayette 57, Montour 55: Matt Thomas scored 18 points and South Fayette survived a last-second three-point attempt by Montour to beat the visiting Spartans 57-55 in overtime in Section 5-AAA.
The win moves South Fayette (7-3, 10-7) to within one game of section-leader West Allegheny, which lost at Trinity. Montour (6-4, 10-6) is in fourth place.
South Fayette outscored Montour 8-6 in overtime. Montour had a chance to win at the buzzer after inbounding the basketball from under its basket with 3.3 seconds remaining. The Spartans got the ball to the top of the key and had an open three-pointer, but the shot was an airball, giving the Lions the victory.
K.J. Rhodes scored 17 points to lead Montour and Kaleb Bryan had 15.
Ryhan Culberson scored 11 points for South Fayette.
Canon-McMillan 42, Mt. Lebanon 41: Mt. Lebanon put four players in double figures and held off a late charge by Canon-McMillan to edge the Big Macs, 42-41, in a Section 4-AAAA game on the Blue Devils’ home court.
Mt. Lebanon (7-5, 10-10), which is battling for a playoff berth, led 28-23 at halftime before C-M started chipping away at the deficit. The Big Macs pulled to within 34-32 after three quarters.
A three-pointer by C-M’s Jake Davey – his second three of the fourth quarter – pulled the Big Macs to within 42-41. Canon-McMillan then forced a turnover with 30 seconds remaining and held the basketball for the final shot. This time, however, Davey’s three-pointer rimmed out Mt. Lebanon escaped with the win.
Mark Lamendola and Joey Passodelis each scored 11 points for Mt. Lebanon, and Eddie Jenkins and Antonio Garofoli had 10 apiece. They were the only players to score for the Blue Devils.
Davey paced Canon-Mac (2-9, 7-11) with a game-high 12 points.
Belle Vernon 48, Ringgold 46: Noah Bukowski rebounded a missed shot and made a game-winning shot as time expired as Belle Vernon defeated host Ringgold 48-46 in Section 4-AAA.
Ringgold (3-8, 7-10) led 35-29 entering the fourth quarter before the Leopards mounted a late charge. With the scored tied 46-46 and nine seconds, Belle Vernon was able to get off four shots before the final buzzer. Bukowski grabbed Belle Vernon’s third offensive rebound of the possession and put in the game-winner, which denied Ringgold coach Phil pergola his 600th career win.
Tommy Rodriguez led Belle Vernon (4-7, 7-11) with 14 points and Joey Sabolek had 10.
Dakota Browning scored a game-high 17 points for Ringgold, which led 4-2 after the first quarter.
Beth-Center 38, Carmichaels 27: Beth-Center moved into a tie for fourth place in Section 4-AA with a 38-27 victory over visiting Carmichaels.
Bradey McDonnell led Beth-center (4-6, 7-8) with a game-high 15 points. Nick Pryor followed with 10 points. The Bulldogs pulled away over the final 16 minutes after leading 15-12 at halftime.
Carmichaels is 2-8 in section and 9-10 overall.
Avella 48, Aquinas Academy 36: Avella outscored Aquinas Academy in each quarter to take a 48-36 victory in a non-section game.
Steve Miller and Shawn Willard each scored 12 points for the Eagles (8-12). Willard had 10 rebounds and five blocks. Kevin Painter had 10 points and 10 assists.
Aquinas Academy fell to 7-5.
Waynesburg 79, Frazier 69:
Darton McIntire and Mitch Warman each had a double-double to propel Waynesburg to a 79-69 victory over Frazier in a Section 4-AA game.
McIntire had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Waynesburg (6-4, 9-7), which clinched third place in the section. Warman had 22 points and 25 rebounds.
Caleb Cox led Frazier (4-6, 9-9) with 15 points. Josh Cox and Mark Dillon each had 13 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 61, Geibel Catholic 59: D.L. Garrett made a tie-breaking layup and Gage Clark added a clutch free throw in the closing seconds as Jefferson-Morgan edged host Geibel Catholic 61-59 in Section 3-A.
Garrett, who scored a game-high 23 points, made a basket that gave Jefferson-Morgan (3-7, 4-15) a 60-58 lead. Geibel made one of two free throws before Clark made it a tw0-point game. Geibel, however, was unable to get off a final shot before time expired.
Clark scored 20 points. Bailey Miller led Geibel (2-8, 3-12) with 21 points and Kyle Toth had 17.
Seton-La Salle 73, Burgettstown 35: Bill O’Malley and Cletus Helton each combined for 35 points to help Seton-La Salle down Burgettstown, 73-35, in a Section 3-AA game.
O’Malley scored 20 points and Helton 15 for SL (8-3, 9-9).
Max Shaw (12 points) and Ryan Lounder (11 points) paced Burgettstown (3-9, 6-14) with 11 points.
South Park 71, McGuffey 63: Four players reached double figures and South Park managed to down McGuffey, 71-63, in a Section 5-AAA game.
Howard Ball poured in 20 points and McClain Huff added 16 for South Park (5-6, 6-11). Torry Hawkins chipped in with 13 points.
Shaun Sanders paced McGuffey (0-10, 5-14) and Nick Haynes contributed 16. Colin Chapman had 13 rebounds and Trent Belleville had 10.
California 74, Mapletown 17: Kass Taylor had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead california to a 74-17 victory over winless Mapletown in Section 3-A.
The win improves Cal to 9-1 in the section and 12-5 overall.
Jaycee Conaway had 11 points and Ben Wilson 10 for the Trojans.
