Double-double by Layman leads Maryland to victory

The freshmen on the Maryland roster had no idea what it would mean to get a victory at Ohio State.
Senior forward Jake Layman not only told them, but showed the way when the No. 8 Terrapins beat the Buckeyes 66-61 Sunday to ease the memory of painful losses in Columbus.
Layman had 16 points, including the final six of the first half to give the Terrapins a 37-31 lead, and added 10 rebounds.
“He’s lost twice in the previous years he was here. Bad losses,” said sophomore guard Melo Trimble, who had 20 points. “So he wanted to come in here and win it. He played with a lot of heart.”
Maryland (19-3, 8-2 Big Ten) lost by 16 points to the Buckeyes in December 2013 as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and a year and two days ago in its first visit to Value City Arena as a member of the conference then then-No. 16 Terrapins were upset 80-65.
“For the new guys it’s their first time playing here,” Layman said. “Guys from last year don’t really understand how important it was for me to come back in here and get this win.”
Ohio State (14-9, 6-4) had some avenging to do as well after losing by 35 points at Maryland 15 days earlier.
The Buckeyes went ahead 51-50 on Kam Williams’ jumper with 6 minutes left but Trimble hit two foul shots to regain the Maryland lead and the Terrapins secured the win with six free throws in the final 25 seconds.
“This game we came out with more energy, more effort against them,” Ohio State forward Jae’Sean Tate said. “We put it on all on the line. In the end we came up short.”
Michigan State 96, Rutgers 62: Bryn Forbes scored all 18 of his points in the first half and No. 12 Michigan State tied a school record with 17 3-pointers in a 96-62 victory over Rutgers.
The Spartans (19-4, 6-4 Big Ten) have won three in a row since a three-game losing streak that dropped them well off the pace in the conference title race. They had little trouble with Rutgers (6-16, 0-9) thanks to their torrid outside shooting.
Iowa 85, Northwestern 71: Peter Jok had 22 of his 26 points in the second half to help third-ranked Iowa blow past Northwestern 85-71.
Jarrod Uthoff scored 23 points for the Hawkeyes (17-4, 8-1 Big Ten), who sent Northwestern to its fifth straight loss.
Uthoff shook off his season-low nine points in Thursday’s loss at No. 8 Maryland with 19 in the first half as Iowa went up by 16. Jok followed with three straight 3s and Iowa rolled to its seventh league win by at least 10 points.
Notre Dame 85, Wake Forest 62: Zach Auguste had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Demetrius Jackson added 14 points in his return to the starting lineup as No. 25 Notre Dame defeated Wake Forest 85-62.
V.J. Beachem added 15 points for the Fighting Irish (15-6, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Jackson, who missed a game with a pulled hamstring in a win over Boston College last week, added eight assists and seven rebounds.
Villanova 68, St. John’s 53: Josh Hart had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Kris Jenkins added 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 6 Villanova to 68-53 victory over St. John’s on Sunday, the Red Storm’s 12th straight loss.
The Wildcats (18-3, 8-1) held onto first place in the Big East by bouncing back from a horrible first half to pull away in the final minutes. The Wildcats shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field in the second half.
