Rebellion can’t solve Ford, Racers
Taylor Schlopy’s leadoff home run in the top of the first inning was all the runs Jailyn Ford would need as Akron shut out the Pennsylvania Rebellion, 2-0, Monday night at Consol Energy Park.
Schlopy hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field to give Akron (15-11) a 1-0 lead in the first off of Dallas Escobedo.
It was one of only four hits allowed by Escobedo in a hard-luck loss. She went the distance, striking out four batters and walking one.
Ford fired a two-hitter with four strikeouts and did not walk a batter, throwing 50 of her 77 pitches for strikes. She didn’t allow a hit until a leadoff single by Mandy Ogle to open sixth inning.
Following the homer by Schlopy, neither team scored again until the top of the seventh when Akron added an insurance run.
Alex Hugo reached on a bunt single to start the inning and moved to second on an error on a grounder to short by Sandra Simmons. Both runners were sacrificed over one base on a bunt by Griffin Joyner and Hugo scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Thomas.
Alisa Goler singled to open the bottom of the seventh for the Rebellion (11-19), but Lexi Elkins struck out an Kristyn Sandberg lined a shot to Ford, who threw to first to record a double play and end the game.
Prior to the game, the Rebellion announced the signing of former Eastern Kentucky star Hayley Flynn.
Flynn, a right-handed pitcher, had a 26-10 record with a 2.14 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 2016.
