Wild Things lose 10-1 lead to Miners
MARION, Ill. – Steve Marino hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Southern Illinois make an amazing comeback in a 12-10 victory over the Washington Wild Things in a Frontier League game Sunday.
The Miners trailed 10-1 after four innings before erupting for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, adding five more in the sixth and one each in the third and eighth. Nolan Early had two triples and drove in two runs and Edison Sanchez doubled and drove in two for the Miners (41-17).
Marino hit his 13th home run of the season off Andrew Woeck, who allowed 5 runs (4 earned) in 1 1/3 innings of relief off Brian O’Keefe (6 runs in 4 2/3 innings). Starter Rick Teasley gave up 10 runs in three innings for the Miners.
Chris Grayson went 4-for-6 with his second home run of the season, scored three times and drove in two for the Wild Things (29-29), who scored three in the first, four in the second and three in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. David Popkins had two doubles, scored twice and drove in two, Kyle Pollock had three RBI and Ricky Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three runs in Washington’s 15-hit attack.
