Waynesburg women advance to ECAC semifinals
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Heather Davis and Addy Knetzer combined for 44 points and seventh-seeded Waynesburg made 10 fourth-quarter free throws to seal a 78-73 upset victory over second-seeded McDaniel in a ECAC Division III South tournament game Wednesday night at the Gill Center.
Waynesburg will play third-seeded Stevenson (15-10) Saturday in the semifinals at Washington & Jefferson’s Henry Memorial Gymnasium. With a victory, it will play the winner of W&J and Marywood Sunday in the championship game.
Davis had a game-high 28 points, including 19 in the second half, and eight rebounds, while Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, added 16 points and seven rebounds for Waynesburg (15-13), which held a 35-34 lead at halftime. McDaniel (21-7) took a four-point lead with 8:26 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Davis, who made four of her five three-pointers in the second half, made back-to-back three-pointers to give the Yellow Jackets the lead. The Green Terror pulled to within one point with just over three minutes left in the game, but Waynesburg made 8 of 10 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Waynesburg shot 50 percent from the field to overcome 21 turnovers. McDaniel, which got just two points from its bench, was led by by Lindsey Nichols’ 27 points.
Kassidy O’Keefe, Lauren Blair and Katie Gehlmann each added nine points for the Yellow Jackets.
