Abby Hay, a freshman from Peters Township High School, won the 200-yard individual medley in the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool Thursday.

Hay touched in 2:03.85, nearly a second faster than runner-up Peyton Kondis of Oakland Catholic.

“Until the turn, I could see (Kondis),” Hay said of her closest competitor, “but I kept going. This being my first WPIAL meet, I didn’t know what to expect but I have attended big meets before. I was pumped up for this one and I was comfortable. You just go hard until you hit the wall.”

The PT girls 200 medley relay finished in 5th place with a school record time of 1:48.52. The relay was comprised of Olivia Yocca, Loeva Palu-Benson, Abby Hay, and Abbi Strennen. The boys medley relay finished in 6th place with a time of 1:36.27. This relay was comprised of Stephen Hopta, John Martin, Mitchell Golias, and Jake Rose. The boys 200 free relay of Mitchell Golias, Jake Rose, Paul Luniewski and Benon Brewer finished in 7th with a time of 1:29.0.

Meanwhile, Canon-McMillan’s boys 200 medley relay team broke a 41-year school record when the team turned in a 1:41.92 to finish 12th. Team members are Turner Gill, Ross Barber, Cody Stewart and Liam Sulc. The 1975 record of 1:43.00 was the longest-standing at the school.

It was one of three school records Canon-McMillan broke in this meet.

“It was a great first day,” said head coach Lee Burnsworth. “I’m happy that we got the records. The boys were close to it when we swam Upper St. Clair earlier in the season.

The team of Brittany Byer, Emily Georgetti, Ryann Stewart and Maria Montuoro smashed the school record with a 1:53.26 time in the 200 medley relay. The Big Macs placed 14th. The old record was 1:54.06, set last season.

Individually, Byer broke her own school record in the 200 freestyle she set last season (1:54.80). She finished fourth with a time of 1:54.74.

Gill finished seventh in the 50 free with a time of 21.88. Cody Stewart took sixth in the 100 butterfly in 51.84. The boys 200 free relay team of Gill, Sulc, Nicholas Pirollo and Stewart was 10th with a time of 1:30.81.

Other C-M places included Georgetti (200 IM, 34th, 2:20.61); Montuoro (50 free, 17th, 25.19); Sulc (100 fly, 32nd, 56.15) and Jacob Viviano (100 fly, 37th, 57.08). Other team finishes were girls 200 freestyle relay (14th, 1:42.19) and boys 200 freestyle relay (10th, 1:30.81).
