Rohanna in contention after hole-in-one, 29 on front 9
Rachel Rohanna had the best nine-hole stretch of her career Friday morning and it moved the Waynesburg native into contention at the LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif.
Rohanna, an LPGA Tour rookie, shot 7-under par 29 on the front nine, including a hole-in-one on the 147-yard No. 3, and ended the second round with a 6-under 66. That moved Rohanna to 5-under for the tournament and into a tie for ninth place. She is five shots behind leader Jenny Shin of South Korea.
Rohanna began the day tied for 56th place.
Rohanna, who is the third-highest ranking American on the leaderboard, shot the second-lowest round of the day. Shinn shot 65 and leads the field at 10-under. She has a one-stroke lead on Lydia Ko of New Zealand and American Brittany Lang.
After a par on the first hole, Rohanna birdied No. 2 and followed with the hole-in-one. Following a par on No. 4, she birdied three consecutive holes, including the par-5 No. 5, and added another birdie on the ninth to complete the 29 on the front side. Rohanna played the back nine in 1-over, which included eight pars.
