Baseball: California notches 17th victory
California finished the regular season as the second-winningest Class A team in the WPIAL after the Trojans rolled to a 10-1 victory over visiting Charleroi in a non-section game Thursday.
The win gives Section 1 champion California a 17-2 record overall. Section 2 runner-up Serra Catholic won 18 games and Section 5 winner OLSH has 16 victories. Charleroi (11-7) is playoff bound in Class AA.
The WPIAL will announce pairings for the playoffs Friday afternoon.
Winning pitcher Brandon Powell threw a six-hitter and California scored seven runs over the first two innings.
Casey Zajicek was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Trojans’ 13-hit attack.
• Bentworth rallied from an early two-run deficit to defeat Monessen 3-2 in a non-section game.
Marc Gibson staked Monessen (4-11) to a 2-0 lead with a homer in the first inning. Bentworth (12-6) chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. That was enough for winning pitcher Taylor Bunner, who threw a five-hitter and struck out five.
Jake Maimone and Klint Wingerstahn each had a double for the Bearcats.
• Belle Vernon scored four runs in the second inning and three Leopards pitchers made them hold up for a 4-2 victory over visiting Brownsville in a non-section game.
Ben Cole, Deven Judy and Jesse Hartman each had RBI-singles in the second inning and Josh Hoffman drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the Leopards’ final run.
Belle Vernon pitchers Matt benicky, Evan Johnston and Jacob Callaway combined on a four-hitter.
