SAUGET, Ill. – Bryan Haar hit two of Washington’s three home runs, and the Wild Things defeated the Gateway Grizzlies, 8-6, Sunday afternoon before 6,350 at GCS Ballpark.

Washington won two of the three games in the season-opening Frontier League series. The Wild Things begin a three-game series Tuesday night in Joliet.

Haar started a five-run fourth inning with a solo homer off Gateway starting pitcher Sasha Kuebel (0-1). Grant Fink gave Washington a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring double, John Ziznewski’s infield single scored Fink and Austin Wobrock capped the big inning with a two-run single.

After a home run by Gateway’s Blake Brown made it 5-2, Haar hit his second homer of the game – and third in two days – a two-run shot that put Washington ahead 7-2.

Seth Heck’s two-run homer pulled Gateway to within 8-4, but Wobrock, who was 3-for-5, hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth.

Gateway’s Tyler Tewell hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Washington starter Chase Cunningham (1-0) pitched five innings for the win and was followed by three relievers.
