Fort Cherry volleyball to state playoffs

The Fort Cherry High School girls volleyball team earned a spot in the state tournament by defeating Frazier, 3-1, in the WPIAL Class A third-place match Saturday afternoon at Baldwin High School.

South Fayette had its bid for a spot in the PIAA tournament end when the Lions were swept by Knoch in the Class AAA third-place match. Knoch won a wild first game 32-30 and eliminated the Lions from postseason competition by winning the next two games, 25-23 and 25-18.

Fort Cherry (17-2), in the state tournament for the first time, will play Tuesday night in the first round of the PIAA playoffs against the District 9 champion Coudersport.

Sites and times for the state tournament are expected to be released by the PIAA today.
