California women open with lopsided victory
ERIE – Miki Glenn had 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals as California opened its season with a 74-59 win over Notre Dame, Ohio, in the opening round of the Mercyhurst Conference Challenge in a women’s basketball game Friday night.
Lana Doran added 20 points for the Vulcans (1-0), who led 14-12 after one quarter before extending that to 34-26 at the half.
Shantara Parsons chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds for Cal.
Kelsey Miller had 21 points and eight rebounds for Notre Dame (0-1).
The Vulcans will face West Liberty in the second game of the tournament at 3 p.m. today.
Virginia State 78, California 53: California opened the Kent McBride era with a 78-53 loss to host Virginia State at the McDonald’s Trojans Tip-off Classic in a men’s basketball game.
McBride, former head coach at Concord, takes over for longtime California head coach Bill Brown.
Brice Rowe and Richard Granberry had 11 point each for Virginia State, which had 12 players score in the game and led 40-24 at the half.
Ramon Creighton led all scorers in the game with 18 points for California (0-1), which also got 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Daniel Sapp off the bench.
