Waynesburg women open with win over Frostburg
Addie Knetzer led four Waynesburg players in double figures with 17 points to help the Waynesburg University women’s basketball team open the season with a 70-61 victory over a poor-shooting Frostburg in nonconference action at Marisa Fieldhouse.
Monica Starre and Katie Gehlmann each scored 12 points and Mackenna Drazich added 10 for the Yellow Jackets, who led 40-25 at halftime.
Junior forward Kirsten Rayner scored a game-high 18 points and junior guard Alexis Welch added 11 points for Frostburg, which sank only 25 of its 78 field goal attempts. Rayner and Warren combined for 29 points accounting for 47 percent of the Bobcat total. Junior guard Sharyce Warren was the third Bobcat player to reach double-figures. She scored 10 points and added a team-high five steals in 21 minutes.
Waynesburg had 23 turnovers and hit jut 4 of 14 attempts from behind the arc.
The Washington & Jefferson men’s basketball team opened the season with a 96-84 nonconference loss at Denison Tuesday.
Dave Muerer and Jeff Speelman combined for 44 points for Denison. Muerer led the way with 23 an Speelman shipped in 21. Andrew Castagnetti had five three-point field goals for 15 points as Denison broke open a 40-40 tie at halftime with a 56-44 run over the final 20 minutes.
Brian Graytok, who led W&J the Presidents in scoring last year with a 15.7 points-per-game average, scored 23 points. Graytok made 9 of 13 shots from the field, and added five free throws. He had five steals four rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes.
Christian Rohaus scored 17 points for W&J on 6-for-12 shooting. Sean Stinelli also made 6-of-12 from the field and 3 of 7 three-pointers to finish with 16 points. Brian Lindquist finished with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
